Pokemon TCG’s New Mega ex Cards Are Game-Changers You Can’t Ignore!

In the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Mega Evolutions are making a comeback, now designed to offer a safer and more enjoyable gaming experience. This update represents a significant advancement in tailoring older mechanics for contemporary gameplay.

2025’s Pokemon Day brought thrilling updates for players, such as the unveiling of the Legends: ZA trailer and information about the Pokemon Champions video game. Unfortunately, tabletop gamers were overlooked in this announcement, as it was confirmed that Megas will make a comeback in the Trading Card Game.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but speculate on the workings of the upcoming Mega EX cards, based on a sneak peek we got with Mega Lucario EX and Mega Gardevoir EX during the recent trailer.

Mega Evolution isn’t new – but no one remembers it

The concept of Mega Evolution made its debut in the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) in 2014, appearing with the X and Y expansion sets. The special cards associated with this evolution, known as Mega Pokemon EX, functioned in a manner similar to V and VMAX cards.

In this game, players must first obtain a Lucario EX card and put it on their bench. Then, they need to use another card to evolve Lucario EX into Mega Lucario EX. Although the two-step evolution process isn’t too bad in theory, some unexpected complications caused problems with its functionality.

Initially, pulling two Prize Cards upon drawing an EX card can make a game progress swiftly if not fortunate. Consequently, losing one’s EX cards could lead to a rapid end of the match. Moreover, the Energy requirement for both EX and Mega EX cards was substantial, leading to complex setup processes and challenges. As a result, many players preferred using powerful EX cards over undergoing the Mega evolution, due to its difficulty.

Due to its design, Mega cards in the Trading Card Game were often perceived as challenging to utilize and configure. As a result, many fans primarily collected them without using them extensively, and only a handful stood the test of time as go-to strategies during that period.

How the Scarlet and Violet era Megas do it better

A potent card such as the Mega X isn’t supposed to be overly simple to use, but the contemporary version of this feature appears far less harsh compared to its ancestor.

In the two displayed cards, you get a sense of how this mechanism operates. Unlike traditional EX cards, these won’t need a base EX card for evolution. Instead, they will evolve in the same way regular EX cards do. For instance, Mega Lucario (EX) evolves from Riolu, and Mega Gardevoir (EX) evolves from Kirlia. These are affordable cards that can be effortlessly obtained using Supports, Items, or Pokemon Abilities.

Furthermore, the energy costs for these cards are significantly reduced compared to periods X and Y. Mega Lucario ex’s move “Mega Brave” needs just two Fighting-type Energy to inflict 270 damage points. On the other hand, Mega Gardevoir ex possesses two moves that each require a single Psychic-type Energy. Additionally, Gardevoir has an energy-accelerating ability and an attack that strengthens with the number of energies it holds. This strategy, reminiscent of cards like Serperior VSTAR in the past, is both enjoyable and popular.

Comparing the same Pokémon from the EX era with its appearance during X & Y generations, it’s undeniable that the updated versions of the Mega Evolution mechanism have significantly improved.

Enhanced HP elevates the new Mega Lucario to 340 and Mega Gardevoir to 360. Instead of having just one move, they now possess two. Both of their moves inflict significantly higher damage on opponents. They are less vulnerable during setup due to useful items and well-thought-out strategies, allowing for swift execution.

Although the true impact of the Mega EX mechanic on the current Pokémon Trading Card Game metagame won’t be clear until it’s battle-tested, there’s a strong possibility it could bring significant shifts. Regardless of how the landscape evolves, the adjustments made to the Scarlet and Violet versions have addressed the major problems that rendered Mega unwieldy in previous iterations.
