Pokemon TCG launches AI battle challenge with $50,000 prize pool

The Pokemon Company is launching a contest where developers build AI to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Winners will receive cash prizes and assistance from tech leaders like Google and Nvidia.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game AI Battle Challenge was launched on June 16th, and is being hosted with Kaggle, a Google-owned platform for machine learning and data science.

This competition challenges people to create AI that can play the Pokemon Trading Card Game. It’s a test of whether AI can master the game’s strategy, build effective decks, and adapt to changing situations.

Pokemon wants to know if AI can play the TCG at a high level

The website explained that Pokemon Trading Card Game poses a tough problem for artificial intelligence programs.

The game offers a lot of strategic depth thanks to its huge variety of cards, different ways to play, how card types interact with each other, careful deck building, secret elements, and the constant need to react to changing situations during gameplay.

Artificial intelligence has already proven its skill in complex strategy games like Chess, Shogi, and Go. Now, it’s facing a new test: the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

The competition begins with two parts: a Simulation Category and a Strategy Category.

The Simulation Category will be open from June 16th to August 17th, 2026. Teams will create AI agents and test them against each other automatically on Kaggle. This category does not include any financial prizes.

I’m really excited for the Strategy Category, which kicks off on June 16th, 2026 and runs until September 14th, 2026! To compete, we’ll need to write up a report detailing the thinking behind how our AI works – basically, the strategy we used. They’ll be judging us on things like how consistently our AI performs, how creative our ‘deck’ design is, and how well it actually does in the simulation. It sounds like a tough but fun challenge!

Okay, so the eight best teams in the strategy game are moving on to a final event – it’s happening sometime in 2026, which feels like ages away, but I’m already hyped to see who makes it and how they’ll do!

Everyone who makes it to the final round will get $3,000 in Google Cloud credits. The winning team will receive a $50,000 prize, and the second-place team will get $30,000.

The tournament will follow the official rules for the Pokemon Trading Card Game’s Standard format, but players can only use cards supplied by the event organizers. Each match will also have a 10-minute time limit.

The Pokémon Company is hosting this event, partnering with Matsuo Institute and HEROZ. Google, Google Cloud, and Nvidia are providing support.
