One of the less anticipated trailers from today’s Nintendo Direct was for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Normally, The Pokémon Company prefers to make its announcements during its Pokémon Presents events, but not this time. The new trailer didn’t give a release date or unveil any new mega evolutions, yet it did provide some insights into how trainer battles might be structured. Every night in Lumiose City, certain areas are cordoned off by red fences, and these are the zones where trainers can join the Z-A Royale competition.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A reveals the Z-A Royale, stealth mechanics, and more
In the game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, for the first time in the series, all the action takes place within a single city. This initially sparked curiosity about how players would encounter wild Pokémon and fight against trainers. Typically, these elements are discovered by exploring beyond towns and cities into the wild routes connecting them. However, with Legends: Z-A, we now know how they’ve addressed these questions. The city will feature areas called Wild Zones, which can be found at any time of day, where players can find wild Pokémon. Additionally, only during the night, red-fenced areas known as Battle Zones appear, offering a chance to engage in battles with trainers.
Today’s discussion revolves around the Z-A Royale, a topic we delved into after gaining additional insights about Wild Zones in the recent Pokémon Presents. The Z-A Royale isn’t just an alias that aligns with the game title; players will ascend through the alphabet, starting at rank Z and gradually progressing to rank A. As stated on the official Pokémon website, if a trainer manages to reach Rank A, they won’t merely acquire the reputation of being the strongest; it seems they might also be granted one wish. The specifics of this are yet unclear, but it’s likely that it ties into the game’s larger narrative.
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a fresh combat system unlike any other in the Pokémon series has been introduced. Instead of the traditional turn-based format, it offers real-time battles where both trainers and Pokémon can freely navigate the battlefield. The success of attacks depends on timing, range, and direction. In regard to trainer battles, there’s an option for players to retreat from a challenging encounter if needed.
Beyond this, as the player, you’ll discover another skill: creeping up on rival trainers stealthily. This tactic offers an instant edge, for these trainers will possess a meter indicating their alertness level. If the meter fills up, they’ll spot you and your Pokémon could be taken aback, unable to react. However, if you manage to surprise an opponent with an attack, it will grant you a significant advantage. In such cases, your strike will always be a critical hit, inflicting substantial damage and putting you in the lead during battle.
To move up in the ranks, players will need to compete and emerge victorious in Promotion Games. By engaging in fights and fulfilling requirements specified on bonus cards found within the combat area, you’ll collect ticket points. Accumulate enough ticket points and you’ll receive a Challenger’s Ticket, enabling you to take part in a Promotion Match.
In the game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it appears the core gameplay revolves around two main activities. By day, explore the wild zones to capture and train Pokémon for the upcoming night battles. At night, when battle zones become active, take on tough Trainers in the Z-A Royale competition. Some aspects of the game remain vague, such as whether the battle zones change location each night and how this might affect gameplay. The game’s website also suggests using the prize money earned from Z-A Royale battles to buy essential items for combat, which could mean that once you enter a Z-A Royale battle zone, you may not be able to leave until the battles are finished, so it’s smart to be well-prepared.
At the moment, it appears that we’re set to discover more about Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which is slated for a late 2025 release, sometime in the future. It might take a while until we get new updates on this game, but I’m eagerly anticipating learning more details about this distinctive addition to the Pokémon series.
