Pokemon Legends Z-A: How to catch Chespin, Froakie and Fennekin

Pokemon Legends: Z-A features Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig as starter Pokemon, but fans of the original Pokemon X and Y are curious when they can get Chespin, Froakie, and Fennekin. Luckily, it doesn’t take long! You can add all three to your team fairly early in the game by completing Side Missions 7, 8, and 9, which each reward you with one of these starter Pokemon. Plus, these side missions offer fresh new content to enjoy!

How to catch Chespin

The first Side Mission is a simple one: find and catch a feisty Chespin! Head to the mission marker near Restaurant Le Wow on Hibernal Avenue. You’ll see a cutscene of Chespin trying to fight a car, and it’s up to you and your Pokémon to help calm it down. You’ll need to defeat it three times in a row to convince it to join your team. As a reward, you’ll also receive 1,000 Poke Dollars, 3 EXP Candy XS, and 1 EXP Candy S. It’s a quick and easy mission!

How to catch Froakie

This mission appears after Fennekin’s, but it’s best to complete Froakie’s mission first if you don’t have a Water-type Pokémon yet. In ‘A Challenge from Froakie,’ you won’t battle – instead, you’ll race against Froakie on a Scaffolding Course. You can find the course east of Jaune Sector 8. You’ll need to complete the course in under 30 seconds, then again in under 40, and finally under 50. If you beat all of Froakie’s times, he’ll join your team, and you’ll also receive 1,800 Poke Dollars, 3 EXP Candy XS, and 1 EXP Candy S.

How to catch Fennekin

This Kalos Starter quest is the most detailed one so far. It begins with a woman near a tired Fennekin in Magenta Sector 2. She’s concerned, but the Pokémon Center can’t figure out what’s wrong, so she asks you to consult the Herbalist, who’s marked on your map. He explains that Fennekin often eat Revitalizing Twigs to get their energy back. He used to sell them, but now he can’t easily get them because the place where they grow is in a Wild Zone.

Your task is to find the Revitalizing Twig in Wild Zone 5 for Fennekin. I suggested saving this mission for last because you’ll need a Pokémon that can clear away piles of Toxic Sludge to reach the area where the twig is located. Water-type moves work perfectly for this! If you completed Froakie’s quest already, you’ll have everything you need. Wild Zone 5 isn’t very big, and if you follow the path of Toxic Sludge piles, you’ll quickly find the area with interactive objects. The Revitalizing Twig will be one of those objects.

Go back to your Fennekin. Giving it the Twig will restore its energy, and it will happily join your team as a thank you. You’ll also receive a reward of 1,200 Poke Dollars, 3 EXP Candy XS, and 1 EXP Candy S.

Can you catch more than one of each Kalos Starter?

These side missions let you get one guaranteed starter Pokémon from the Kalos region, but what if you want more than one? Eventually, you’ll be able to catch as many as you like later in the game. You can find Froakie in Wild Zone 16, Chespin in Wild Zone 17, and Fennekin in Wild Zone 18. They don’t appear very often, but dedicated players can hunt for the perfect one near the end of the game.

That’s all! I’m really happy the game let you get the Kalos starters through interesting quests, and also made it easy to catch more later on. Whether you just want one of each, or are planning to spend a lot of time hunting for shiny Pokémon, good luck and enjoy your time in Lumiose City!
