Today, The Pokémon Company unveiled the release date for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and also announced a date for an upcoming Pokémon Presents presentation in July. Details were shared about the differences between the Switch and Switch 2 versions of this game. As a result, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will offer a $10 upgrade pack, similar to many other Switch games. Pre-orders for Pokémon Legends: Z-A will become available on June 5th, which is also the day the Switch 2 is released. The next Pokémon Presents presentation has been scheduled for July 22nd, and it’s expected that we’ll learn more about Pokémon Legends: Z-A before its launch on October 16th.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A has an October release date, and Pokémon Presents is planned for July
Since the releases of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in 2022, Pokémon Legends: Z-A marks the first original Pokémon game that followed. The Scarlet and Violet games had two rounds of DLC released in 2023, but there was no significant Pokémon release in 2024 or most of 2025 – an anomaly for a franchise known for annual releases. In fact, the first game in the Legends series, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, came out in the same year as Scarlet and Violet. It’s speculated that Game Freak is using this extra time to refine the upcoming game, aiming for a smoother performance than the rocky launch of Scarlet and Violet. Yet, based on the reactions to trailers thus far, many fans are hesitant about their expectations.
In the sequel to the Legends series, titled “Legends: Z-A,” the traditional pattern of game updates for the larger franchise was disrupted. Unlike previous titles such as “Legends: Arceus,” where players journeyed to the past to compile the first Pokédex in the region Hisui, this new installment appears to be set exclusively within Lumiose City, the capital of Kalos from the X and Y games. Contrary to expectations of being rooted in the past, this game seems to present a futuristic setting, with characters appearing as holograms for dialogue, designated areas within the city that cater to wild Pokémon, and the use of a phone as a glider. Previously, we only had a vague release date of “late 2025,” but the official announcement puts it on October 16th, which is earlier than anticipated.
It’s unusual for The Pokémon Company to provide fans with such advance notice for a Pokémon Presents event, and as reported by Serebii founder Joe Merrick, this is “unprecedented” as we usually only get a few weeks’ notice. We don’t know exactly what this presentation will cover, except possibly updates on the game Legends: Z-A, but there’s one strong hint. The year 2026 marks a significant milestone for Pokémon, being the 30th anniversary since the original games were released in Japan in 1996. As Scarlet and Violet were the ninth generation of Pokémon games, this July could potentially give us our first look at the tenth generation. With new games scheduled to be released in 2026 to celebrate the 30th anniversary, it seems like an opportunity that The Pokémon Company wouldn’t want to miss.
