As a long-time Pokemon enthusiast who has journeyed through Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and even the Galar region, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I gaze upon the exquisite merchandise commemorating the 25th anniversary of Pokemon Gold and Silver. The Ho-Oh and Lugia plushies are nothing short of breathtaking, and the reversible Johto region jackets are a dream come true for any dedicated trainer.
Enthusiasts of the beloved Pokémon series should recall that exactly 25 years ago, the games Pokémon Gold and Silver were first introduced in Japan. These games arrived in the U.S. almost a year later. In these releases, more than 100 new Pokémon joined the mythos and are often considered among the best titles in the franchise. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of these iconic games, The Pokémon Company is releasing exclusive merchandise that might spark your desire to collect them all!
On the official Pokemon website, it was revealed that the merchandise is initially only available at the Japanese Pokemon Center. At present, it seems this merchandise will be exclusive to Japan. Highlights of the new products include plush toys for game mascots Ho-Oh and Lugia, along with some stylish jackets boasting reversible designs showcasing the Johto region, which debuted in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Other items include transforming cups, plates, backpacks, bookends, and various other merchandise.
Unfortunately, it appears that neither Nintendo nor The Pokemon Company have made arrangements to sell this merchandise in the U.S., given the dedicated fanbase here. This means that scalpers are likely to snap up these items and resell them at high prices on American auction sites. As a result, fans living outside of Japan may find it difficult to get their hands on these products until the situation is addressed by Pokemon’s parent companies.
Despite Pokémon being omitted from the Toy Hall of Fame in America, there’s a high probability it will be inducted eventually. The Pokémon franchise has already achieved remarkable success with over 30 million downloads for the mobile game Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket within its first week on the App Store and Google Play. Additionally, this number doesn’t include the 99 million units of Pokémon sold on Nintendo Switch. Even after almost a decade since its release, Pokémon Go continues to be popular among mobile gamers.
