As a seasoned Pokémon Go player with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I must admit that this year’s Holiday Part 2 event has left me somewhat bewildered. It’s not every day that Scrooge himself seems to be lurking within the hallowed halls of Niantic!

The Pokemon Go Holiday Part 2 event has begun, yet some fans are questioning whether there might be a Grinch within the Niantic team, as the wild spawns appear quite frightening.

The festive period carries significant weight in Pokémon Go, not only due to Christmas and New Year celebrations, but primarily because it marks the end of the year, and players anticipate special events that match the grandeur of the season.

Each year during December, this occasion is traditionally associated with winter and the related Pokemon species like Ice, Water, Normal, and Fairy types. But this year, something appears to be different.

The types represented in their Holiday Part 2 event are less Christmas and more Halloween.

Is it Christmas or Halloween?

In the Holiday Part 2 event this year, Niantic has chosen to highlight Dark and Ghost types like Murkrow, Alolan Zigzagoon, and Banette, which has left some players puzzled due to the absence of Ice-type Pokémon in the lineup.

Someone at Niantic is a Scrooge because these spawns don’t scream “Christmas”

A Reddit user snapped a photo as they strolled around to demonstrate that the Pokemon they encountered seemed more fitting for Halloween rather than Christmas. Surrounded by Koffing, Murkrow, and Alolan Zigzagoon, they mused aloud about why there weren’t any cheerier Pokemon popping up on Christmas Eve.

The player responded with laughter, questioning, “Did I somehow end up on the naughty list and only getting these types of respawns?” Another added, “This event has just as much to do with Christmas as The Sound of Music does (why is that movie even considered a Christmas film?).

As a gamer, I found myself taken aback when one user posted a rather peculiar request, suggesting the addition of “Ice Pokemon” with an increase in Swinub spawn and shiny chances. The mention of Sudowoodo, Cyogonal, and Delibird seemed to hint at Christmas-themed characters like the Christmas tree guy, snowflake guy, and Santa penguin. It was a bit confusing, but I guess it’s all part of the fun and creativity that comes with being in a gaming community!

Another replied, “Barely any ice types and barely any Christmas costumes is extremely lame for a Christmas event. I do like background stuff, but the spawns suck”.

Unlike Holiday Part 1, this event didn’t quite meet its mark by showcasing a higher number of festive Pokemon characters such as Dedenne in costumes, Bergmite, Snover, and others. However, it does differ from the norm by incorporating more Pokemon that align with the holiday theme, like Alolan Vulpix, Galarian Darumaka, and Cetoddle, which outnumber the usual Dark and Ghost-type Pokemon.
