Pokemon Go Director Says Players’ Data Won’t Be Sold, No Intrusive Ads

In recent times, Scopely, a mobile gaming company owned by Saudi Arabia, announced its acquisition of Niantic’s gaming division. This is the team behind popular games like Pokemon Go and others. The deal was worth an impressive $3.5 billion, making it one of the biggest gaming acquisitions ever. However, if you are concerned that Scopely might introduce changes to Pokemon Go that you may not prefer, Michael Steranka, the senior director at Niantic, wants to reassure you that this won’t happen.

In conversation with Polygon, Steranka shared that he’s had extended discussions with Scopely over several months. He mentioned that Scopely is content with Pokemon Go’s ongoing success and has no plans to change its free-to-play structure or introduce annoying advertisements into the game.

According to Steranka, intrusive ads are not and will never be present in Pokemon Go. Scopely, being fully aware of the game’s uniqueness, has no intention of tampering with its winning formula. In other words, you can expect a clean gaming experience without any disruptive advertisements or similar elements. Steranka emphasized that Scopely values autonomy for their teams, and they believe that such an approach would not be suitable for Pokemon Go.

Concerning player information, Steranka emphasized that the company doesn’t trade this with external entities and guaranteed that this practice won’t alter in any way, whether it’s now or in the future. Additionally, he verified that Niantic’s real-life events such as Pokemon Go Fest will carry on. Steranka further clarified that Scopely is intrigued by understanding why Pokemon Go maintains its popularity and aims to apply some of these insights to improve their own games.

As a dedicated Pokémon Go player, I’m thrilled to share that we’ve got some exciting plans brewing for the game’s 10th anniversary, due in 2026! Stay tuned for more details as we gear up for this monumental occasion.

Steranka expressed that they’ve been eagerly anticipating this for quite some time, and they want to ensure that the upcoming year is an exceptional celebratory occasion for Pokemon Go. Additionally, it’s worth noting that next year marks the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon brand. As a fan of Pokemon, he believes you will have the best year ever in 202x!

Players don’t need to wait much longer for the upcoming Pokemon game on Switch. The title “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” is set to release by the end of the year, and Nintendo has already given us a sneak peek at some of its starting Pokemon.
