According to a producer, Sir Daniel Fortesque was nearly featured in a live-action MediEvil film, complete with original tunes from the band Tenacious D.
Even though the Superhero era continues (with blockbusters like Superman and Fantastic Four leading the summer box office), it’s worth noting that a genre once deemed unlucky by filmmakers has gained traction as a lucrative venture for Hollywood – the adaptation of video games into movies.
In 2025, a Minecraft film remains the second highest-earning movie (but will eventually be surpassed by Lilo & Stitch), The Super Mario Bros Movie is one of the most successful films ever made, and movies like The Last of Us, Arcane, and Fallout have been widely watched and praised for their quality.
Although PlayStation Productions hasn’t managed to hit a home run with any film so far, their movies like Uncharted, which was financially successful but polarizing, Gran Turismo that didn’t rake in much money, and Until Dawn that came and went quietly, the question remains: what about MediEvil?
The world needs a MediEvil movie with Tenacious D
According to writer-producer Ben Mekler, who shared the information on Twitter, Sony’s PlayStation was contemplating the production of a MediEvil film.
He expressed that we almost transformed one of his beloved video games, MediEvil, into an animated film featuring original tunes by Tenacious D.
There was a strong possibility that we were about to transform one of my beloved video games, MediEvil, into an animated film featuring unique tunes composed by the band, Tenacious D.

Mekler has a reputation for sharing jokes and creating false hype about newly released movies, yet his current statement seems sincere.
Originally launched on the PlayStation 1 back in 1998, this game takes players on an adventure starring Sir Daniel Fortesque, formerly known as the “Hero of Gallowmere,” who has been resurrected. Throughout the story, he traverses a world filled with magic and zombies to ultimately confront Zarok, a wicked sorcerer.

Back in 2023, sharp-eyed fans noticed what appeared to be Fortesque’s legs in a video on PlayStation Productions’ website, hinting that there might have been plans for a movie adaptation. However, it remains unknown whether this project was Mekler’s or something else entirely, as he only retweeted a post about it. It should be noted that it was never officially confirmed that a MediEvil film was in production.
This is for those who are in the know.
Since Mekler hasn’t provided any updates about his proposed MediEvil film, we’re still in the dark regarding its reasons for not moving forward. In the meantime, peruse our compilation of top video game movies and check out what other releases are lined up this year with our 2025 movie calendar.
