In 2014, a notorious hacking group called Lizard Squad boasted about causing outages on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on Christmas. Over ten years later, one of Lizard Squad’s members, Julius Kivimaki, is the focus of Max’s upcoming four-part documentary series titled “Most Wanted: Teen Hacker.” In a sneak peek from the first episode, it appears that Kivimaki himself isn’t expressing regret for the alleged crimes he’s been charged with.
The Lizard Squad was a group of hackers with questionable ethics who got hacked after selling hacking tools to others. In 2016, two members of their collective were apprehended for the Christmas attacks on XBL (Xbox Live) and PSN (PlayStation Network). However, this series primarily focuses on Kivimaki, who later changed his name to Aleksanteri Kivimaki, due to accusations of cyber crimes he is said to have committed since he was just 15 years old while residing in Finland.
The trailer highlights several alleged offenses attributed to Kivimaki, such as hacking Elon Musk’s account, prank-calling SWAT teams to an FBI agent’s residence, and threatening a plane carrying Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley with a bomb. This bomb threat led the Air Force to compel the plane to perform an emergency landing.
As a teen, Kivimaki had evaded prison time due to his conviction for over 50,000 cyber crimes. However, this changed in 2024 when he was found guilty of leaking Finnish therapy records and was subsequently sentenced to serve six years in prison.
In September, Max is set to debut the inaugural episode of “Most Wanted: Teen Hacker.” This exciting series will include conversations with Kivimaki, his affected parties, well-known hackers from around the world, a retired FBI agent involved in the case investigation, and cybersecurity specialists.
