As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I find myself intrigued by Sony’s latest announcement – the PlayStation 5 Pro. After all, who doesn’t love an upgrade? But, as someone who’s been through multiple console generations, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. The $700 price tag and the lack of a disc drive are reminiscent of the PlayStation 3’s early days, which wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for my wallet or patience.

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the recent developments surrounding the PlayStation 5 Pro. After decades of whispers and speculation, Sony officially unveiled the PS5 Pro last month, but the journey wasn’t without its hurdles. The hefty $700 price tag has sparked quite a stir, and the absence of a built-in disc drive hasn’t gone unnoticed either. However, despite these bumps in the road, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s co-CEO, Hideaki Nishino, has reaffirmed their dedication to both editions of the PS5, as well as a 10-year lifespan for this console generation.

In conversation with Variety, Nishino expressed his delight at the fact that highly engaged gaming enthusiasts seem drawn to the PS5 Pro. He further expressed confidence that this trend will extend to new users as well. He emphasized that their design approach is always with a focus on staying one step ahead, ensuring that they’re not only taking the next step but also considering the steps beyond. This, he explained, is crucial for maintaining the continuous 10-year cycle of the PlayStation generation.

The PlayStation 4 Pro was unveiled back in 2016, and we’re now just four years away from the launch of the PlayStation 5. Despite Sony focusing on the PS5 since 2020, there are still games for the PlayStation 4 being developed, extending its life span to around 11 years. The question remains if Sony will hold off releasing the PlayStation 6 until the late 2020s, especially if Microsoft brings out a new generation of Xbox beforehand. However, Nishino didn’t discuss this possibility; instead, he emphasized that the PlayStation 5 Pro is not a next-generation console.

Nishino stated, “I merely wanted to clarify that the Pro model isn’t the next phase of gaming. Instead, it remains part of the PS5 generation. The PS5 Pro is essentially a more visually advanced version of the existing PS5. Therefore, it’s a matter of personal preference for consumers who feel the need for enhanced visuals. Essentially, we’re offering an upgrade option within the same console generation.

PlayStation 5 Pro will launch on November 7.
