Today, Sony’s gaming brand, PlayStation, unveiled a fresh studio within its roster, known as teamLFG. This studio was previously associated with Bungie, who revealed their plans for Destiny 2’s development over the next two years yesterday. However, Bungie has since separated to establish this new entity as an independent studio. The team behind teamLFG consists of seasoned gaming professionals, who have already started giving hints about their upcoming debut project.
PlayStation announces a new studio, teamLFG, with a focus on multiplayer games
Hermen Hulst, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, revealed the news on PlayStation.Blog. In his announcement, Hulst mentioned that teamLFG, initially formed at Bungie, has also attracted developers from various studios to work on an exciting incubation project. Although the specific project teamLFG is working on remains unknown, there have been whispers about “Project Gummy Bears,” which could potentially be a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game with a younger audience in mind, as suggested by Eurogamer.
As a gamer, I can’t help but be intrigued by the new team I’m part of. We’re not just a bunch of old-timers who have worked on iconic games like Destiny and Halo, but we also have fresh faces with innovative ideas and talents. The fact that they’ve shipped titles like League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room is impressive and tells me a lot about the direction this studio might be heading. It seems we’re aiming to create something in the spirit of those groundbreaking live service games.
It’s great to see that the meaning behind the studio’s name is clarified. “LFG” in ‘teamLFG’ stands for ‘Looking For Group’. They strive to develop games where players can discover camaraderie, social connections, and a sense of belonging. To be frank, I didn’t immediately associate this acronym with the studio name, but it’s possible there could be other interpretations that the creators may have considered or were aware of.
“teamLFG outlined their plans as well, which involve creating engaging multiplayer action games set in immersive worlds that players can invest countless hours into learning, playing, and mastering. It’s essential for them to remain adaptable, responding not only during the pre-launch phase but also throughout the live service as they expand the game and its community over the years. This might suggest free console playtests or even a simultaneous release on multiple platforms like PlayStation and Steam, considering their success with Helldivers 2.”
After teamLFG released a sneak peek at their debut project, they described it as a collaborative action game that takes cues from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life simulators, and games featuring frog-like characters. The setting for the game is a humorous, fantastical world situated in a unique, science-fantasy universe. Given the fusion of various genres, one might liken it to a possible blend of Super Smash Bros. with MOBA elements, but the inclusion of life simulator and “frog-type” game elements make it seem more intricate. The term “frog-type game” presumably implies that the game revolves around frogs, although this is not explicitly stated. As we await further details from this fresh studio, the specifics remain to be seen.
