2D point-and-click games may seem like relics from the past, but The Drifter, an upcoming game by Powerhoof in partnership with Dave Lloyd, demonstrates their continued relevance today. This innovative title breathes new life into the genre, proving that the classic format still has a lot to offer.
The Drifter’s dark journey
The Drifter” is an intense, suspenseful journey crafted by the minds behind Peridium and Crawl. It’s a fast-paced narrative ride, influenced by Carpenter, King, Crichton, and a dash of ’70s Australian exploitation cinema. However, this isn’t a leisurely walk in the park; it’s packed with non-stop action that will keep you alert from beginning to end.
If you didn’t catch it during Steam Next Fest, don’t worry! You can still have a look at the demo for the game The Drifter. I personally gave it a go, and now it’s sitting pretty on my Wishlist. The game boasts stunning pixel art, engaging animations, top-notch voice acting (with an Aussie accent that really steals the show), and a gripping dark-synth soundtrack that perfectly sets the tone.
You have the option to enjoy traditional pointer-and-click controls or more instinctive dual-joystick control, catering to both PC gaming and relaxed living room experiences.
In this scenario, we assume Mick Carter’s character, a transient who returns to his home but quickly senses something amiss. Early on, we find ourselves fleeing from a train and struggling to recharge our phone, with no smooth sailing in sight. Soon, it turns out that we end up in a dangerous situation where we are bound, submerged in water – essentially, we’re “sleeping with the fishes.” However, just when all seems lost, an unknown force gives us another chance to escape this predicament.
The developers are assuring an exhilarating tale filled with mysterious corporations, insane scientific endeavors, and an age-old fixation, and I’m eagerly awaiting its unveiling on July 17th.
