Pixar unveils new movie Gatto and everyone is saying the same thing

Although Elio’s premiere is still pending, Pixar has disclosed its plans for an original film titled Cat, set to hit cinemas in summer 2027. Already, based on a single snapshot, fans are drawing comparisons with other works.

If you’re a long-time fan of Pixar, starting from Toy Story, you might have noticed that their more recent films like Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental have had varying reactions, with Elio yet to be fully evaluated. However, the anticipation following Toy Story 5 (set for release on June 19, 2026) brings something new to the table.

On June 13th, 2025, Pixar unveiled Gatto, the latest project from Luca director Enrico Casarosa. This upcoming film will delve into the story of a black cat in Venice who adores music but faces rejection by locals due to their superstitions. The movie will employ a fresh approach to hand-painted animation style.

Although giving Pixar a new direction could be beneficial, some people may find that the concept seems remarkably familiar to an existing film, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by fans either.

New Pixar movie Gatto is already being compared to Flow

2024’s Flow, the masterpiece that swept this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, might have left an impression on you. This remarkable piece was brought to life by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis. In it, I, a resilient cat character, find myself grappling with the aftermath of a catastrophic flood that ravaged my home. Seeking shelter on a drifting vessel alongside other diverse animal companions, I’m compelled to form alliances despite our initial differences, as we navigate through the trials and tribulations of survival together.

To put it straightforwardly, the primary similarity appears to be the main character being a black cat. However, both lack dialogue and exhibit an unpolished, raw animation style, aspects that don’t typically align with Pixar’s usual production approach.

If the studio aims to regain recognition in award circles, it might need to draw inspiration from other studios. On a budget of €3.5 million, Flow managed to gross $30 million globally… which is quite impressive, especially for a lesser-known studio.

Despite lacking more specifics regarding Gatto, its present outline indicates a shift in focus. Yet, this hasn’t deterred fans from drawing comparisons.

1. One fan countered the news by saying, “There’s no way the movie ‘Flow’ winning an Oscar influenced this decision!” Another fan added, “It can’t possibly be connected to ‘Flow’, could it? Haha.” (Informal and conversational)

2. A fan responded skeptically to the news, stating, “I highly doubt that the Academy Award for ‘Flow’ had any impact on this decision!” Another fan chimed in with a laugh, “Surely there’s no connection between this decision and ‘Flow’, right?” (More formal but still conversational)

3. One fan expressed disbelief at the news, stating, “I can’t believe that the Oscar for ‘Flow’ played a part in this!” Another fan joined the conversation, laughing, “It couldn’t possibly be due to ‘Flow’, could it?” (More formal but maintains a conversational tone)

As a gaming enthusiast, hearing that Pixar’s trying out a fresh animation style has me intrigued yet skeptical – I’ll hold my excitement until I catch a glimpse. But let me tell you, the hype is real! Casarosa, in my book, is a mastermind, and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table. A third fellow gamer agreed with me, while another added, “This could breathe new life into Pixar.

Zilbalodis’ upcoming project, Limbo, has yet to be announced, whereas Gatto’s release date might take some time to confirm. So, stay alert and watch this space.
