Pirate Software reveals major issue keeping him from multi-streaming on Twitch & Kick

As a seasoned gamer and long-time Twitch streamer, I can understand why Pirate Software, or Jason Thor Hall, has chosen to steer clear of Kick. His experience in the industry and his commitment to ethical streaming practices shine through in his decision. The ‘Other, Watch Party’ category on Kick seems to be a grey area that encourages the broadcasting of copyrighted content, which goes against the very foundation of responsible streaming.

As a devoted admirer of Jason Thor Hall, also known by his alias Pirate Software, I’ve been following his recent thoughts on streaming platforms. He’s shared his reasons for why it’s unlikely he’ll stream on Kick, outlining the challenges that led him to this decision.

Pirate Software simultaneously broadcasts content on multiple platforms, such as Twitch and YouTube, reaching viewers on various websites.

Nevertheless, he expresses that it’s unlikely he will simultaneously stream on Kick, as he elaborated on this topic during his October 2024 broadcast.

He confessed, “I won’t be streaming on Kick. frankly, I don’t see myself ever streaming there, it just doesn’t make sense for me to do so.

Initially, Hall pointed out that there was an issue with Kick’s ‘Other, Watch Party’ category, which was originally called ‘Other, TV Shows & Movies.’ Despite being renamed, it continues to appear under this title in search engine results and in the URL of the category.

In simpler terms, if users on your platform stream copyrighted content, you receive a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) claim and remove it. However, by creating a category named ‘Other, TV Shows & Movies’, you’re encouraging such behavior on your platform.

Hall asserted that he had conveyed this opinion about one of the co-founders and prominent broadcasters on the platform, Trainwreck – whom Hall stated became upset with his criticism.

He berated me as an idiot for nearly half an hour during his live stream, adding that Twitch indeed contains copyrighted material. However, he pointed out that there’s no specific category for this content on Twitch. Instead, individual streamers share it, only for the streams to be eventually removed.

…”He removes the Video On Demand (VOD), reclassifies it under ‘Other, Watch Party,’ but keeps the label as ‘Other, TV Shows, Movies.’ A year later, this section remains unchanged, teeming with individuals streaming anime and TV shows allegedly without proper rights.

Additionally, Hall emphasized that Kick allegedly leases Amazon’s interactive video service to stream copyrighted content, implying that the company is essentially using Amazon as an unauthorized live streaming platform similar to The Pirate Bay.

Hall pointed out that Twitch grapples with broadcasters streaming copyrighted material. Notably, the platform stirred up controversy in 2022 with an event called ‘TV Meta,’ during which numerous streamers aired shows such as Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Avatar: The Last Airbender for thousands of viewers.

This ‘meta’ ignited a passionate discussion online, as broadcasters debated the moral implications of streaming content that wasn’t theirs. Yet, even popular streamers didn’t escape sanctions, as both Pokimane and Disguised Toast faced DMCA-related bans for watching these programs with their viewers.
