Obsidian Entertainment will be releasing a public beta for the turn-based combat mode of Pillars of Eternity on November 5th. The beta will be available for players on Steam and Xbox PCs.
The team is continuing to develop and improve the turn-based mode for Pillars of Eternity, and the beta will remain active for a while as they do so. They’re planning to add more features and polish things before the official release. While we’re hoping to hear about controller support and whether the game will work well on the Steam Deck – especially with UI scaling for smaller screens – the current beta focuses solely on testing the turn-based combat system.
I’m so excited! Pillars of Eternity is finally out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and of course, PC! If you’re curious what I thought of the game, you can check out my review of the PC version here, and the console version here.
Obsidian Entertainment has announced a public beta for the turn-based mode in Pillars of Eternity, and you can find more information from them directly.
Greetings, Watchers,
We’re launching a public beta on November 5th for players on Steam and Xbox PC! This beta lets you experience the original Pillars of Eternity with a brand new turn-based combat system.
If you liked the Turn-Based Mode in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, you’ll feel right at home with this new version, which has been improved based on player feedback.
We’ve made several changes to improve combat! Movement and actions now scale better with character speed, making abilities that boost speed more valuable. Many common actions, like changing weapons or using items, are now instant and don’t take up your turn, though you can only do each type of instant action once per turn. Battles are now faster and more dangerous for everyone, creating a more exciting experience. You can also choose your preferred combat style – either turn-based or real-time with pause – when you start a new game, and even switch between them during gameplay. We’re also working on a way to quickly toggle between modes directly from the game interface.
Since this is a beta version available to the public, you might encounter some bugs or issues while we continue to improve things. We’ll be making updates regularly over the next while as we get ready for the official launch.
We’re thrilled to share a message from Josh Sawyer, the Game Director, explaining the importance of Turn-Based Mode for Pillars of Eternity and how your feedback made it possible.
We’ll be relying on your feedback to improve the turn-based mode! During the beta, we’ll be gathering reports, bug fixes, and ideas from players like you.
Thanks for your continued support of Pillars of Eternity! We’re excited to see you in the beta starting November 5th.
