The new thriller, Thrash, is proving to be a success for Netflix. Starring Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton, it’s currently the most popular English-language movie on the streaming service, having earned 37.7 million views in its first week after premiering on April 10th.
Thrash‘s victory comes as no surprise. On its very first day of availability, .
What Is Thrash About?
In the movie Thrash, Lydia Dynevor plays Lisa, a pregnant woman stranded in a town overwhelmed by floodwaters from a powerful Category 5 hurricane. The storm brings more than just water, however – sharks begin to appear just as Lisa goes into labor. She finds an unlikely ally in Dakota (Whitney Peak), who hasn’t left her house in years, and they both rely on Dakota’s uncle, Dale (Djimon Hounsou), a marine biologist, to help them survive and keep track of the dangerous sharks.
In addition to Phoebe Dynevor, Colin Woodell, and Djimon Hounsou, Thrash features Matt Nable, Andrew Lees, Alyla Browne, Stacy Clausen, Dante Ubaldi, Sami Afuni, and Chai Hansen. Tommy Wirkola directed and wrote the film, while Adam McKay and Kevin Messick served as producers.
In 2024, Sony Pictures started developing a survival thriller directed by Wirkola, initially called Beneath the Storm. Filming began in Melbourne, Australia, in July of that year. The title was later changed to Shiver in March 2025. However, in January 2026, Netflix bought the rights to the film and decided to rename it Thrash. Netflix plans to release Thrash on April 10th.
Honestly, I’ve just started referring to this film as ‘the shark movie’ because it’s had so many different titles! It’s been a real journey for this project. It was originally called The Rising, then they switched it to Beneath the Storm, then Shiver, and then back to Shiver before finally landing on Beneath the Storm again. It’s gone through a lot of changes, to say the least! I told The Hollywood Reporter on its release day that keeping track of the names is a bit of a headache.
Thrash Draws Jaws Comparisons
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics – currently holding a 40% ‘Rotten’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 43 reviews – the movie Thrash is attracting a large audience. Viewers haven’t been much kinder, giving it just a 28% rating on the Popcornmeter with over 250 votes. It’s possible the film is so bad it’s actually enjoyable, which could explain its popularity.
Any movie featuring sharks will naturally be compared to Jaws, and the new Netflix film Thrash is no different. While it doesn’t reach the same level of critical acclaim as Steven Spielberg’s classic, some viewers have pointed out similarities – or a lack thereof.
Netflix has started 2026 strong with several popular movie releases. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s film, The Rip, was their biggest hit in months. Following that success, they’ve released other well-received titles like the action thriller War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson, and the Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man. This week, Netflix is adding another new film to its lineup.
Thrash is streaming now on Netflix.
