As a long-time fan of adventure and intrigue, I can’t help but feel my heart race at the prospect of Indiana Jones gracing our screens once more, this time on the Xbox Series X|S and PC! Having grown up with the iconic character, I remember the thrill of those cinematic moments, from snakes to boulders, and everything in between.
Although Sony’s PlayStation 5 hosts popular Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine (who are owned by Disney), Xbox has secured deals with Disney for some properties of their own. These include Marvel’s Blade and the Indiana Jones series from Lucasfilm. Previously, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer expressed caution about licensed games, but he recently commended Disney and Lucasfilm for being robust collaborators on their upcoming joint projects.
Spencer expressed his satisfaction with our collaboration with Lucas and Disney, saying they have been excellent partners. He mentioned that we are working together on the Blade project with Arkane Lyon, and he recently visited their team.
During that same conversation, Spencer shared his viewpoint on why he’s not fond of handling licensed titles. The issue being that these licenses can expire, causing games to be taken down from the market over time. Conversely, he favors concentrating on intellectual properties (IP) under Microsoft’s developer and studio umbrella. However, there are exceptions to this rule for games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as the developer, MachineGames, demonstrates such a deep-seated enthusiasm for that specific property, which Spencer finds commendable.
Spencer expressed his view that the Indiana Jones team seems deeply passionate about Indiana Jones and his universe. For him, one of the game’s standout aspects is the immersive storytelling, making players feel like they’re living as Indiana Jones from a first-person perspective. It appears they aimed to create this experience. However, our focus, considering the intellectual properties we own, is on utilizing those that we haven’t yet explored. I’m an advocate for us delving into IPs we haven’t revisited yet.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9, while PlayStation 5 fans will have to wait until Spring 2025. In the meantime, Microsoft and IHOP are launching an Indiana Jones-themed menu starting today, November 18. Members of IHOP’s International Bank of Pancakes will also be able to use their receipts to earn “PanCoins” that can be redeemed for Xbox prizes or even a new line of limited-edition cups featuring Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Halo Infinite, and Sea of Thieves designed by Xbox artist Matt Taylor.
