Blumhouse Productions is planning to produce a movie from yet another popular horror video game, “Phasmophobia,” which gained massive popularity as a first-person paranormal puzzle game during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The movie version is being jointly produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, along with Kinetic Games Limited. As of now, there’s no distributor or confirmed release date.
Launched initially as an early access title in 2020, “Phasmophobia” rapidly captured the attention of social media, with Twitch streamers and YouTube personalities quickly embracing this multiplayer ghost-hunting game developed by Kinetic Games Limited. The game proved to be a significant success for independent studios, ranking as the top-selling video game on Steam for several weeks towards the end of that year. Since then, it has been released on various consoles and has sold over 23 million copies worldwide. Additionally, “Phasmophobia” was highly acclaimed, winning the award for best debut game at the 2020 Game Awards.
At the inaugural “Business of Fear” gathering held in Hollywood on Tuesday, the new project was presented. This event saw Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, and Abhijay Prakash, president of the company, take to the stage as speakers. Remarkably, this initiative is part of Blumhouse’s expanding portfolio in video game adaptations, with their latest venture being a follow-up to their 2023 release “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, a movie inspired by a horror game that gained popularity through streaming platforms. Notably, this Universal production garnered a massive $291 million globally, even though it was also made available for streaming on Peacock in North America at the same time.
The follow-up movie titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” is set to hit theaters on December 5. Additionally, Blumhouse Productions has a gaming branch in its portfolio, with upcoming releases like “Eyes of Hellfire” and “Sleep Awake.
