PGA Awards Debra Hill Fellowship to NYU Stern and Tisch Alum Karen Madar

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that the selection of Karen Madar for the 2024 Debra Hill Fellowship is a truly inspiring choice. Her dual degrees from NYU Stern and Tisch, coupled with her impressive track record of producing successful shorts, clearly demonstrate her dedication to the art of filmmaking.

The Debra Hill Fellowship for 2024, given by the Producers Guild of America, has been bestowed upon Karen Madar, a newly-minted alumna from both NYU Stern and Tisch schools.

Since graduating with a dual MBA and MFA from NYU Stern and Tisch, Madar has created numerous short films. One of these shorts, “Skin Can Breathe,” directed by Chheangkea, received recognition in the form of an award from HBO for the Asian Pacific American Visionaries competition. “Let,” helmed by director Alyssa Loh, was selected as an official entry for SXSW 2024. Madar is currently collaborating with Chheangkea on an upcoming feature film, “Little Phnom Penh,” as well as other projects.

Since 2005, the Producers Guild of America has been honoring the memory of Debra Hill by fostering upcoming producers and executives. This is a commitment that stems from her career-long dedication to mentoring fellow producers,” said CEO Susan Sprung. “Notably, Deniese and Lucienne, previous recipients of the Fellowship who have since built successful careers in production, are continuing Debra’s legacy by leading the selection panel for the Debra Hill Fellowship.

In 1978, Hill collaborated with John Carpenter as both producer and co-writer on the movie “Halloween,” a film that went on to achieve immense success among independent productions. Unfortunately, she passed away in March 2005 at the age of 54.

Through the fellowship, Madar will get a $5,000 financial aid and a $2,500 travel voucher provided by Delta Airlines.

Madar’s accolade was bestowed upon him by committee chairs Denise Davis and Lucienne Papon, who head the Debra Hill Fellowship Committee at the Producers Guild of America (PGA).
