Peter Marshall, ‘Hollywood Squares’ Host, Dies at 98

As a fellow admirer of the world of entertainment, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of respect and gratitude towards the late, great Peter Marshall. His remarkable journey from an NBC Radio page to an Emmy-winning game show host is nothing short of inspiring.

98-year-old Peter Marshall, the popular Emmy-winning presenter of “Hollywood Squares,” passed away on Thursday due to kidney complications, in Encino.

His wife Laurie said in a statement that he died at home.

Over 19 Emmy nominations and winning 5, this individual has hosted over 5,000 episodes of the original “Hollywood Squares” game show, while also pursuing careers in acting, singing, and hosting events.

Marshall, originally known as Ralph Pierre LaCock, was born in Huntington, West Virginia. His professional journey commenced as a radio page and theater usher with NBC, specifically at Paramount Theater. During his tenure, he also served in the military, where his role included being a disc jockey for Armed Forces Radio.

Marshall collaborated on a comedy routine with Tommy Noonan, performing it across the nation and gracing “The Ed Sullivan Show.” As a contract artist at 20th Century Fox, he featured in movies like “Ensign Pulver,” “The Rookie,” and “Annie.”

1966 saw him being employed as the host for “The Hollywood Squares,” with familiar faces such as Paul Lynde, Joan Rivers, Rose Marie, and numerous guest stars gracing the show regularly.

Later, Marshall took on hosting roles for various shows such as “The Marshall’s EbMaster Show,” “Big Bands from Disneyland,” the interactive series “Fantasy” alongside Leslie Uggams, as well as game shows “All-Star Blitz” and “Yahtzee.”

I’m a loving tribute to the man I admire who leaves behind his cherished partner of 35 years, Laurie, along with daughters Suzanne (married to David), Jaime (partnered with Steve), and son Pete (with Janna). Unfortunately, we also mourn the loss of our dear son David, who preceded him. He leaves a beautiful legacy through his 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
