Peter Kwong, Who Played Rain In ‘Big Trouble in Little China,’ Dies at 73

Peter Kwong, best known for his role as Rain – one of the three martial arts sorcerers in the iconic 1986 action movie “Big Trouble in Little China” directed by John Carpenter, passed away at the age of 73.

It was reported that Kwong passed away peacefully during the night on Tuesday, though no specifics about the circumstances were disclosed.

Born and raised in Sacramento, California, Kwong embarked on his acting career in the late ’70s and ’80s, appearing in various TV shows such as “The A-Team”, “Wonder Woman”, “Little House on the Prairie”, “Miami Vice”, “The Greatest American Hero”, “Cagney & Lacey”, “Dynasty”, “MacGyver” and “227”.

His most iconic character was introduced in the 1986 movie “Big Trouble in Little China,” where he portrayed Rain, one of the Three Storms – three extraordinarily skilled martial artists. He acted alongside Kim Cattrall and frequent collaborator of Carpenter, Kurt Russell. Despite its status as a cult favorite today, the film initially flopped financially, earning just $11 million against an estimated production cost of around $20 million.

1986 found me gracing the silver screen in two memorable roles. In “Never Too Young to Die,” I shared the limelight with none other than John Stamos and the captivating Vanity. Additionally, I had the privilege of acting alongside Eddie Murphy and Charles Dance in “The Golden Child.

Kwong had an equally significant impact in Hollywood off-screen as he did on-screen. For over a decade, he sat on the SAG National Board of Directors, and also held a position on the AFTRA National Board. Additionally, he served on the Television Academy’s Board of Governors, as well as the Executive Committee of the Actors Branch within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
