Veteran actor and frequent choice among fans, Peter Kwong, who also served as a representative in the Hollywood union for many years, sadly passes away at the age of 73.
In a profoundly sad turn of events, I mournfully pen down my thoughts on the untimely demise of martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, who peacefully departed this world on the somber night of May 27th. As a global icon and ardent advocate for numerous communities, his loss resonates deeply within the hearts of fans, friends, and colleagues worldwide.
Kwong is primarily recognized for his portrayal of Rain, one of the Three Storms in John Carpenter’s 1986 cult hit “Big Trouble in Little China.” Throughout the ’80s, he gained recognition with minor but crucial roles such as Tommy Tong in the underestimated martial arts film “The Golden Child” from 1986. His career spanned across decades, featuring him in films like “The Presidio,” “I’ll Do Anything,” “Paper Dragons,” and “Gleaming the Cube.” Kwong also graced television screens with appearances on shows as diverse as “JAG,” “General Hospital,” “Drake & Josh,” and even provided voice-overs for iconic series like “King of the Hill.
For over a decade, Kwong was not just a familiar face on screen, but also an influential figure behind it. He served as a member of the Screen Actors Guild National Board of Directors and the AFTRA National Board of Directors. Additionally, he held positions such as the Television Academy Board of Governors, the Actors Branch Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and represented unions throughout his career. Kwong was known for being one of the most vocal advocates against Asian stereotypes in the industry. At the time of his passing, he held the position of Governor of the Performers Peer Group at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
In 2016, Kwong took a stand against racial stereotypes by joining over twenty others in signing a petition condemning racially offensive jokes aimed at Asians during that year’s Academy Awards. At the time, Kwong expressed his surprise, stating that Academy President Cheryl Boone-Isaacs had spoken about promoting diversity, only for Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen to follow with their questionable jokes shortly after. Kwong noted that while some may argue over the boundaries in humor, such jokes “serve as a license for others not just to repeat these actions, but to intensify them as well.
