After making its debut at Sundance and being picked up by Sideshow and Janus Films for distribution, I’ve had the pleasure of getting a sneak peek at “Peter Hujar’s Day”. Here’s a glimpse of what we can expect!
According to the book titled “Peter Hujar’s Day” by Linda Rosenkrantz, Ira Sachs’ new film is a sequel to “Passages”, starring Ben Whishaw and Franz Rogowski. In this latest production, Whishaw is joined on-screen by Rebecca Hall, who portray friends Peter Hujar (Whishaw) and Linda Rosenkrantz (Hall). Over the course of a day in December 1974, their characters connect, capturing an intimate dialogue that transpired between them. Sachs drew inspiration for this film from a real-life conversation’s transcript between these two individuals.
In this video, Hujar and Rosenkrantz have a debate about their contrasting opinions on fame and artists. Hujar expresses his desire for his work to thrive independently without any stars involved, while Rosenkrantz remains unimpressed by the glamour of even a figure as iconic as Joan Crawford. As the discussion concludes, Hujar leans his head on Rosenkrantz’s shoulder and takes a puff from a cigarette.
The movie garnered favorable critiques after its Sundance screening, as Owen Gleiberman from EbMaster praised it for being a film that derives significance from its absence of conventional drama. He described it as meticulously crafted and compelling to watch. In what seemed to be a relatively subdued year at Sundance, “Peter Hujar’s Day” was one of the rare films to secure a U.S. distributor during the festival, alongside buzzworthy titles such as “Lurker,” “The Perfect Neighbor,” “Sorry, Baby,” and “Train Dreams.
Peter Hujar’s film, titled “Peter Hujar’s Day”, is set to hit theaters this autumn, after it was screened at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.
