What to know (or laugh at):
- Security risks? More like DeFi’s version of a slapstick comedy! Experts at Consensus Miami giggled (and cried) over exploits like Drift’s recent multi-million-dollar oopsie.
- DeFi’s permissionless design vs. institutional KYC? It’s like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole-while the hole is on fire. Hilarious, right?
Institutional investors are all like, “Bitcoin? Sure! ETFs? Why not! Centralized exchanges? Bring it on!” But Perp DEXes? They’re side-eyeing those like a suspicious in-law at Thanksgiving dinner.
At Consensus Miami, the panel “Perp DEX Explosion: Bullish Volumes & Bear Market Resilience” turned into a comedy roast. Featuring the Wizard of SoHo (yes, that’s his name), Michaël van de Poppe (the Dutch trading maestro), and Michael Anderson (the DeFi-scaredy-cat), it was moderated by Jason Atkins, who probably needed a comedy club mic drop after this.
The Wizard of SoHo dropped the mic (not literally) with, “Institutions moving to Perp DEXs? Ha! Good luck convincing them after Drift’s little ‘oops-we-lost-millions’ moment. The next battleground? Surviving the exploit apocalypse!”
Michael Anderson from Canary Labs was all, “DeFi? More like De-Fear. It’s a minefield out there. Every day’s a new headline waiting to scare the pants off you.”
And let’s not forget KYC-the three-letter word that makes DeFi and institutions about as compatible as oil and water. Anderson quipped, “Crypto wants to be non-KYC, but institutions are like, ‘Uh, no. We need paperwork. Lots of it.’”
Meanwhile, Michaël van de Poppe was busy predicting the future: “AI trading? It’s just algorithmic trading with a fancier hat. Soon, we’ll all be replaced by robots. And they’ll probably be better at it. Sorry, humans.”
So, will Perp DEXes ever win over institutional investors? Maybe when pigs fly-or when DeFi stops being a slapstick comedy and starts being a well-oiled machine. Until then, grab your popcorn and enjoy the show!
