‘Perfect Strangers’ Director Scores Smash Hit With New Comedy ‘Madly’ With Raft of Remake Deals to Close at Cannes Market (EXCLUSIVE)

Director Paolo Genovese has come up with another brilliant idea for a comedy, titled “Madness.” This fresh concept has already made a big impact in Italy and will soon be released worldwide.

Titled “FolleMente” in Italy, the film titled “Madness” portrays a first date between a man and a woman in Rome. Each character’s thoughts, ranging from awkwardness to humor, are represented by various actors. This romantic comedy has garnered over 2 million admissions and grossed more than $18 million at the Italian box office since its February 20 release through RAI Cinema’s 01 Distribution. It continues to be popular among audiences.

Together with Isabella Aguilar, Lucia Calamaro, Paolo Costella, and Flaminia Gressi, Genovese penned the screenplay.

Producer Raffaella Leone expresses that they’re receiving requests to remake their work from various parts of the globe, sharing with EbMaster that this time they aim for a different approach compared to “Perfect Strangers.” Specifically, Leone Film Group is exploring the opportunity to co-produce film remakes in countries like Spain, France, and Germany. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing regarding director Paolo potentially directing the U.S. adaptation of the remake.

Leone Film Group plans to set up shop in Cannes, where they anticipate finalizing numerous agreements for their upcoming film “Maybe.” RAI Cinema International Distribution is managing sales for the pre-produced Italian adaptation of the latest Genovese film. According to Leone, several deals are currently being discussed and will also be officially finalized during the Cannes event.

The 2016 film “Perfect Strangers,” distributed by Medusa, has earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most remade movie in cinema history. Remakes of this film have been produced across 24 territories such as France, Germany, Spain, Greece, and South Korea. According to Leone, these adaptations have collectively grossed around $400 million, not including the U.S., where The Weinstein Company previously held rights that have been indefinitely postponed following the company’s collapse.

In the production of “FolleMente,” Raffaella and Andrea Leone serve as the main producers. This captivating Italian film boasts a star-studded cast including Edoardo Leo and Pilar Fogliati in the lead roles, along with Claudia Pandolfi, Vittoria Puccini, Emanuela Fanelli, Maria Chiara Giannetta, Marco Giallini, Maurizio Lastrico, Claudio Santamaria, and Rocco Papaleo. The successful film is a collaborative effort between Leone Film Group’s Lotus Production, RAI Cinema, and it has partnered with Disney+ for streaming rights in major European territories. Additionally, Vice Pictures is also involved in the production.
