Fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians have a reason to celebrate this holiday season: the series is returning to Disney+. Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan, the story blends Greek mythology with the modern world, following Percy Jackson, a teenager who discovers he’s the son of the god Poseidon. While the books are a bestselling young adult series, earlier attempts to adapt them into movies weren’t very successful. However, the Disney+ series, which debuted in 2023, has been much better received because it stays more faithful to the original novels.
Disney+ has unveiled a new trailer for Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This season, based on the book Sea of Monsters, follows Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) as they embark on a quest to rescue their friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri). Meanwhile, Camp Half Blood, the training ground for demigod children, is facing a mysterious threat. The trailer reveals that Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on December 10, 2025, with the first two episodes available at once. You can watch the trailer below.
‘Percy Jackson’ Will Be a Must-Watch Series During the Holidays
As a big fan of the show, I’m excited to hear Disney+ is planning to release Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians much like they did with the first season. You might remember, Season 1 kicked off on December 19th, 2023, with the first two episodes dropping at once, and then new episodes came out weekly until the finale on January 30th, 2024. If they stick to that schedule, we can expect the Season 2 finale around January 21st, 2026. And the great news doesn’t stop there – they’ve already greenlit Season 3, which will cover The Titan’s Curse, the third book in the series! I can’t wait!
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians performed strongly during the 2023 holiday season. Disney announced that 13.3 million people tuned in to watch the premiere within its first six days. Data from Luminate showed the series was the most-watched original series on Disney+ in 2024, surpassing hits like Agatha All Along, X-Men ’97, and The Acolyte. Despite Marvel postponing the release of Wonder Man to avoid competition with popular Christmas movies such as Elf and Die Hard, Percy Jackson and the Olympians proved to be a perfect holiday watch for families.
The popularity of Percy Jackson and the Olympians highlights a smart move in Disney’s current strategy. A recent report indicates Disney is focusing on attracting young Gen-Z male viewers, and Percy Jackson delivers a franchise specifically for them. Unlike Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which come with decades of history and established fans, this new adaptation of Percy Jackson feels fresh and doesn’t carry the weight of past installments. While Disney’s repeated attempts to revive Tron failed, Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be showing the studio what works.
