Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Room Next Door,’ Starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, Set as New York Film Festival Centerpiece

As a long-time aficionado of world cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement for Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” gracing the screens at the New York Film Festival. Having been a fan since his early works like “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” it’s truly heartwarming to see him continue to push boundaries with this, his first English-language feature film.

Pedro Almodóvar’s film “The Room Next Door,” featuring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, has been chosen as the Centerpiece for the 62nd New York Film Festival. This humorous drama will have its American debut at Alice Tully Hall on October 4th.

Stepping into the realm of international cinema, I find myself delving into Pedro Almodóvar’s debut English-language project, “The Room Next Door.” This New York-set film is a poignant tale that centers around the complex relationship between a less-than-perfect mother, portrayed by Tilda Swinton, and her estranged daughter, played by Greta Gerwig. The pair, bound by a deep-rooted misunderstanding, lead separate lives until a chance reunion sparks a renewed connection.

“Almodóvar expressed joy that ‘The Room Next Door’ would be the main attraction at the New York Film Festival. For years, this festival has served as his connection to New York viewers, so it seemed fitting that the film’s characters visit the Alice Tully Hall to watch a movie in one of the scenes. It was emotional for me to film there, at a location filled with cherished memories, and I look forward to continuing to hold these memories close in the near future.”

“The Room Next Door” is Almodóvar’s 15th movie to be screened at the New York Film Festival, a lineup that features titles like “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “All About My Mother,” “Pain and Glory,” and “Parallel Mothers.” Throughout his career, he has earned numerous Oscar nominations, with victories in two categories: Best International Feature Film for “All About My Mother” and Original Screenplay for “Talk to Her.”

“Dennis Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, expressed great delight in announcing Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature as this year’s Centerpiece selection. Mr. Almodóvar is particularly linked with the New York Film Festival, and ‘The Room Next Door’, his latest work, showcases an artist at the pinnacle of his abilities. This film, brimming with wisdom, superb acting, and poignant beauty, seems remarkably suited for our current times.”

I’m thrilled to share that in 2024, I’ll be part of the opening ceremony for RaMell Ross’s historical drama, “Nickel Boys,” at the New York Film Festival (NYFF), presented by Film at Lincoln Center. The festival will run from September 27th through October 14th. Closing our event is Steve McQueen’s historical drama, “Blitz,” featuring the talented Saoirse Ronan. I can hardly wait!
