In June, I’m thrilled to share that Movistar Plus+ will premiere “Pedro x Javis,” a fascinating three-part documentary series about the legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Created and hosted by the renowned filmmakers, Los Javis (Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi), this captivating production combines documentary elements with music performances and inventive reinterpretations of scenes from Almodóvar’s films in an innovative, engaging style. I can hardly wait to delve into it!

The core of “Pedro x Javis” features a deep, personal dialogue among the three filmmakers. Over multiple days, their discussions are filled with unforeseen confessions, emotional recollections, and fresh perspectives about the two-time Academy Award winner’s artistic voyage. Almodóvar humorously remarked during the process, “I fear I may have spoken too much.

The show boasts collaborations with several of Almodóvar’s most renowned associates, including actresses like Penélope Cruz, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Bibiana Fernández, Loles León, Carmen Machi, Lola Dueñas, and Leonor Watling. Notable appearances also include Antonio Banderas, as well as his long-time colleagues such as his brother Agustín Almodóvar (the head of El Deseo), Esther García, cinematographer José Luis Alcaine, and composer Alberto Iglesias.

Beyond interviews, “Pedro x Javis” honors Almodóvar’s enduring influence through vibrant musical performances and recreations of his most memorable movie scenes. These segments showcase talented artists such as Amaia, Nathy Peluso, Guitarricadelafuente, Luz Casal, Albert Pla, Raül Refree, and Antonio Banderas, who creatively reimagine songs from Almodóvar’s films in visually stunning, fresh environments.

Over three episodes named “Friends and Mothers,” “Law and Desire,” and “Death and Cinema,” this documentary delves into themes significant to Almodóvar’s filmmaking, following his path from a young man in La Mancha to becoming one of the most impactful voices in cinema.

The distinctive look of the series was created by Ignasi Monreal, who was responsible for designing the posters, credits, and sets, using authentic props and furniture from Almodóvar’s movies as part of his design.

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the dynamic duo behind “Veneno,” “La Mesías” and “Paquita Salas,” take on roles as both producers and hosts for this production. Joining them are Brays Efe and Paloma Rando who contribute as screenwriters, Guillermo Mendo as co-director, Uri Barcelona as director of cinematography, Celia Cuéllar as editor, Leila Rodríguez as art director, and Álex de Lucas as music director. Domingo Corral, Pilar Robla and Custodio Pastor serve as executive producers for this project.

After thinking back on the experience, Calvo and Ambrossi stated: “It was a great honor to create this project that gave us countless hours with Pedro. Every instant spent with him has been enlightening and an honor. This is a unique tribute to the director who has had the most impact on us. In Pedro x Javis, our realms intersect in a way that merges what we cherish most about television and film. It’s also our first entertainment project from Suma Content, something we’ve always aspired to accomplish, and we’re ecstatic with the outcome.
