Good news for fans of the fantastic crime show Peaky Blinders! It’s not over yet. We’ve known for some time that a Peaky Blinders movie is coming, but now there’s even more to look forward to. A sequel series, which seems like a perfect way to expand the story, has just been greenlit for two seasons.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to hear that the Peaky Blinders story is continuing! Variety reports that Cillian Murphy will be an executive producer, and thankfully, Steven Knight – the brilliant mind behind the show – is coming back as writer and creator. We’re going to meet a whole new generation of the Shelby family, and it’s going to be told over two seasons, each with six hour-long episodes. I can’t wait!
This upcoming show, commissioned for two seasons by Netflix and the BBC, is set in 1953 Britain following the Birmingham blitz. The story begins after World War II, as the city inhabited by the Peaky Blinders begins to recover. It appears this rebuilding process won’t be peaceful, with the plot description hinting at conflict and violence as different groups struggle for control. Here’s what the description says:
Following extensive bombing during World War II, Birmingham is being rebuilt with concrete and steel, aiming for a brighter future. A new chapter in Steven Knight’s ‘Peaky Blinders’ focuses on the fierce competition to control the city’s large-scale reconstruction. This is a time of both incredible opportunities and serious risks, and the Shelby family finds themselves deeply involved in the heart of it all.
Currently, the actors haven’t been confirmed, so it’s unknown whether Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in this continuation of one of his most successful projects, or if the other actors will be back. However, the Oppenheimer star will remain involved as an executive producer.
I’m really excited about the possibility of a fresh start for the Peaky Blinders. I’d love to see a new generation step into the family’s criminal empire, and it would be really interesting to see how they follow in the footsteps of the characters we’ve grown to know over the seasons. It would be fascinating to watch them take over the business.
I’m also really looking forward to what writer and creator Steven Knight has to say, as he shared in a statement:
I’m excited to share the next installment in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ saga. This time, the story returns to Birmingham, depicting the city’s rebuilding after the bombing raids of the Birmingham blitz. A new generation of the Shelby family is now leading the way, and it promises to be a thrilling journey.
It definitely seems like things are going to be quite exciting, and I really hope we get to see a fresh group of characters take over the famous hats and coats and carry on the Shelby family’s story.
However, there’s still a chance Murphy could reappear on screen. Considering Tommy Shelby was born in 1890, he’d be around 63 years old during this new series. But the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man – expected to be released around 2026 – could also play a role. It’s possible the movie could wrap up his story and lead us into this new period.
Simply put, I’m really excited that this amazing story is going on, and I believe a sequel series is the perfect way to continue it. It’ll offer a new angle and storyline, all while keeping us in the familiar world we already enjoy. So, everyone, be sure your Netflix is up-to-date, because the Peaky Blinders aren’t finished yet.
