As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for stories rooted in history and cultural significance, I am thrilled to learn about Peacock’s limited series “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” making its debut at this year’s Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. The festival’s commitment to amplifying Black voices and storytelling resonates with me on a personal level, as I have long been fascinated by the power of cinema to challenge perspectives, provoke thought, and inspire change.
Get ready for an unforgettable experience! The limited series “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” by Peacock is set to make its debut at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, bringing an amazing lineup of celebrities to mark the conclusion of its 22nd edition.
At this special event, “Fight Night” producer Will Packer will engage in a comprehensive conversation about his career, titled “The Power of Legacy and Influence.” This will be followed by a screening of the show. Later on, Taraji P. Henson, Don Cheadle, Chloe Bailey, Shaye Ogbonna, and Will Packer will participate in one of the festival’s popular “Color of Conversation” discussions. Throughout the night, DJ Trauma will entertain the crowd with an eclectic mix of vintage vinyl records, hip-hop and soul tracks from the 1970s to present day.
According to the popular true-crime podcast “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” an armed robbery that occurred on the night of Muhammad Ali’s famous 1970 comeback fight had a profound impact on one person’s life and, in turn, significantly shaped Atlanta into what is now known as the ‘Black Mecca’.
As a seasoned crime reporter with over two decades of experience covering Atlanta’s criminal underworld, I’ve seen it all – from petty thefts to major heists that left the city in shock. But none have piqued my interest quite like the audacious crime that went down at Chicken Man’s afterparty.
The limited series begins streaming Sept. 5 on Peacock.
As a movie critic, I’d say: In 2002, Floyd and Stephanie Rance, the visionary founders of Run & Shoot Filmworks, initiated the MVAAFF – an esteemed film festival that qualifies for Oscar consideration in the short film category. Their mission? To amplify the voices, stories, and rich culture of the Black community.
During this year’s festival, which takes place from August 2nd to 10th, there are several noteworthy events. The opening night will showcase “Sing Sing,” featuring the renowned actor Colman Domingo. A special sneak peek of “Wicked” starring Cynthia Erivo is also on the schedule. We’ll get to see the world premiere of “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can Eat,” with stars Uzo Aduba, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Sanaa Lathan. Additionally, we’ll catch a glimpse of the upcoming MGM+ series “Emperor of Ocean Park.” The documentaries generating buzz include Netflix’s “Daughters,” CNN/OWN’s “Luther: Never Too Much,” and A&E’s “Ol’ Dirty Bastard: A Tale of Two Dirtys.”
Further screenings and debates will be included in the festivities, happening at Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center (MVPAC) as previously planned. For detailed festival info and an up-to-date timetable, check out mvaaff.com.
