Surprisingly, the popular romantic comedy series starring Stephanie Hsu on Peacock has been unexpectedly terminated following its first season, despite receiving highly favorable reviews. It’s worth mentioning that while she gained fame for her screen roles, Stephanie Hsu began her career by showcasing her comedic talent as Karen the Computer in Spongebob the Musical and Christine Canigula in Be More Chill.
In the limelight, it was me who earned recognition for portraying Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” This film, though not conventionally categorized as a comedy, brought out my knack for injecting dark humor into its intriguingly strange narrative as Jobu Tupaki. In 2023, this role even earned me an Oscar nomination.
Following her successful Broadway debut and notable film debut, Hsu has earned a reputation for being an exceptional comedy actor. Her performance in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” brought some humor to the drama, while she shone brightly in “The Fall Guy” and “Joy Ride.” Given these accomplishments, it was no surprise that Hsu landed the lead role in Peacock’s rom-com “Laid,” a hilariously messy production that lived up to expectations.
Peacock Canceled Laid After 1 Season, Despite Positive Reviews
Sadly, Ruby’s Story In Peacock’s Laid Won’t Continue
The television series titled “Laid” revolves around the character Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), a party organizer who develops feelings for one of her clients. However, things take a dark and comical turn when it’s revealed that all her former lovers are mysteriously dying in gruesome ways. With each death, Ruby must unravel the mystery to prevent her love interest, Isaac (Tommy Martinez), from suffering the same fate. The series captivated audiences with its intriguing and shocking plotline, and the impressive performances of the lead cast, particularly Stephanie Hsu as Ruby and Zosia Mamet as AJ, added an extra layer of appeal. Their dynamic together makes their friendship a delight to watch.
Due to the gripping cliffhanger in the finale of “Laid”, viewers eagerly anticipated a second season to unravel the enigma behind Ruby’s former lovers succumbing to their fate. Regrettably, Deadline announced on May 29, 2025, that Peacock has decided to end “Laid” production altogether. Although no explicit reason was given, it is speculated that low viewership numbers might have played a role in this decision. As Deadline suggests, the show failed to appear on Nielsen’s streaming rankings, which often predicts whether a program generates enough interest for another season.
Our Thoughts On Laid’s Cancelation After Just 1 Season
Peacock Needs To Figure Out How To Market Their Shows Better
I’ve found myself repeatedly investing my passion and effort into a series, only for it to be abruptly ended after just one season. Frankly, I’ve grown accustomed to the disappointing reality that the most captivating shows often meet an untimely demise. Yet, when it comes to Laid, my feelings are not one of shock but rather a somber acceptance. It appears as though Ruby had an illicit affair with the show, given its premature expiration – it was doomed from the start.
The peacock platform encounters a substantial challenge in marketing, as they don’t seem to spread the word about their shows extensively enough to reach their target audience effectively. For instance, before its debut, the show “Laid” had garnered minimal attention, which led to a lack of coverage from entertainment websites initially. I strongly believe that if streaming services like Hulu or Netflix had distributed the show, it would have resonated with viewers and possibly been granted a second season.
Regrettably, fans find themselves in an unsatisfying predicament, having many unanswered questions about what could have transpired with no solutions in sight. The finale of Peacock’s “Laid” deviates substantially from the Australian TV series, leaving fans unable to seek answers by watching the original show. Consequently, we find ourselves in a holding pattern, and it seems unlikely that we will ever uncover the mysteries behind the story.
