Peacock Lost 500,000 Subscribers Before Hiking Its Prices

As a long-time Peacock subscriber and avid sports fan, I’m feeling a mix of disappointment and frustration with the recent announcement regarding Peacock’s price hikes. The news that half a million subscribers bailed out before the new rates took effect was not unexpected, given the financial strain Peacock has been experiencing.

In the current month, Peacock raised the prices for its premium plans before the Olympic games in Paris commenced. It seems that approximately 500,000 Peacock subscribers chose not to wait for these price hikes to take place. As per Comcast’s Q2 2024 shareholder report, Peacock lost around 500,000 paying customers during the period between April and June.

Comcast acknowledged through Variety that it overstated the number of Peacock subscribers in its Q1 2024 report by around 500,000. The actual figure was 33.5 million. After recent subscription losses, Peacock now has roughly 33 million paid users.

Comcast has not turned a profit from Peacock as of yet, with the platform reporting a loss of $348 million during the second quarter. This is less money than Peacock has previously lost, but it remains a significant distance from breaking even. Comcast invested $7.65 billion to acquire the media rights for the Olympics through 2032. Additionally, Peacock offers an extensive selection of sporting events, which likely came with a hefty price tag.

As a dedicated Peacock fan, I’m excited to share some updates about the subscription prices. The monthly fee for Peacock Premium is now $7.99, and for those seeking additional perks, Peacock Premium Plus will cost $13.99. On an annual basis, my beloved Peacock Premium will set me back $59.99, while the Premium Plus plan will be $139.99. These new rates have already been applied to new subscribers. As for us existing fans, we’ll begin experiencing these changes with our next billing cycle starting on or after August 17.
