At NBCUniversal, they’re running low on puns and references related to gravity since the hit musical “Wicked” keeps boosting their profits. Already dominating the box office and generating over $100 million from digital sales, this Universal Pictures creation is now breaking records for Peacock in more ways than just watching the movie.
In the recent announcement by Peacock, it was revealed that the debut of “Wicked” garnered a staggering 882 million minutes of viewing within its first three days (March 21 to 23), surpassing “Oppenheimer” and setting a new record as the most-watched theatrical premiere in Peacock’s five-year history. Next week, when Nielsen releases official data for March 17 to 23, it is anticipated that “Wicked” will rank second among Peacock’s streamed features on Nielsen’s streaming movies chart. Interestingly, it appears that many viewers are not just tuning in to watch “Wicked”, but are also staying on the platform to explore the wealth of companion content that Peacock has made available. As reported by a representative from NBCU to Vulture, the entire collection of “Wicked” bonus content, including a sing-along version of the movie, numerous making-of documentaries and featurettes, and several deleted and extended scenes, have collectively garnered 82.4 million minutes of viewership as of this week. Remarkably, it was found that approximately three out of every four viewers of the sing-along edition of the movie also watched the original version.
Peacock has been focusing on creating specialized sections for its most prominent films from its sister film studio, such as Oppenheimer and recently Wicked. For these movies, they’ve created comprehensive hubs that consolidate the films along with additional features and other relevant content. They also catered to die-hard fans of the Wicked series by offering customizable Glinda and Elphaba avatars for user profiles. These characters quickly became the most popular franchise-based avatars, pushing Minion’s Tom down to third place. The success of these launches suggests that Peacock may start creating more blockbuster-focused hubs more frequently and potentially apply this concept to some of its Universal library titles as well.
