PC Cross-Play Is Required For All Multiplayer Games On Epic Games Store, Epic Confirms

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of gaming, I can’t help but applaud Epic Games for their commitment to cross-play across all PC storefronts. This move not only breaks down barriers between gamers, but also fosters a sense of community that transcends digital platforms.

In simpler terms, Epic Games has stated that it’s compulsory for all multiplayer games on the Epic Games Store to support cross-platform play between different digital stores.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled about the Epic Games Store policy for multiplayer games: they ensure that cross-play is available across all PC storefronts. This means that no matter where you buy your games, you can play with your friends without any hassle. Developers have the freedom to implement solutions that meet this requirement, including using Epic Online Services, which might necessitate a secondary installation for features like the Social Overlay (friends lists, cross-platform invites, and so on) on PC.

Epic clarified their statement about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, explaining that the game installs an Epic Online Services client upon accepting the End User License Agreement (EULA), regardless of whether it’s purchased on Steam. This client enables optional cross-play and synchronizes friend lists across services. However, connecting your Steam and Epic accounts for this purpose is entirely optional and will not impact gameplay in any way.

Previously this year, Earth Defense Force 6 drew flak due to its requirement for an Epic Games account to play online. Similarly, Helldivers 2 received criticism for needing a PlayStation Network login. Conversely, Space Marine 2, the new installment, has surpassed Warhammer records. In fact, approximately a quarter-million gamers launched the game on Steam, outnumbering Total Warhammer III’s previous simultaneous player count.
