Paula Hernández, of ‘The Sleepwalkers,’ Attached to Direct Eva Perón Series Project From Argentine Powerhouse Kapow (EXCLUSIVE)

As a passionate admirer of captivating storytelling and visionary filmmakers, I am absolutely thrilled to learn about Paula Hernández’s latest project, “Duarte. Evita behind the Icon.” Her remarkable journey through the world of cinema, marked by her seven feature films that have graced major festivals, is truly inspiring.

Film director Paula Hernández from Argentina, known for “The Sleepwalkers” and “Las siamesas,” is set to direct and co-write a series titled “Duarte. Evita beyond the Icon,” which is being produced by Kapow, a prominent production company based in Buenos Aires. The same company that served as an associate producer on the successful drama series “La Jauría” produced by Fabula-Fremantle.

Set for production in the latter half of 2025, “Duarte” is planned as a five-episode, hour-long series that explores the early years of Eva Duarte, a figure more commonly recognized as Evita, who was the second wife of Argentina’s president Juan Domingo Perón. The series is inspired by her legendary life.

“The project named ‘Duarte’ is among those being showcased at the 2024 Co-Production and Financing Forum, which runs from October 1st to 2nd in Madrid, as part of the fourth installment of Iberseries & Platino Industria event.”

Created by Kapow co-founders Agustín Sacanell, Lucas Rainelli, and Diego Ventura, this series is designed to take viewers on a voyage through Duarte’s personal tale while simultaneously exploring Argentina during those transformative years. Much like Eva Perón, Argentina experiences a complete metamorphosis in the storyline.

The screenplay was penned by Hernández in collaboration with Leonel D’Agostino, a scribe from “La Jauría,” and Pablo Giorgelli, who is not only the director but also a co-writer of the award-winning film “Las Acacias” (Cannes Camera d’Or for Best First Feature).

To date, Hernández has directed seven films that have all been showcased at significant festivals. “Sleepwalkers,” a drama centered around a ritualistic, matriarchal and introspective family, made its debut at Toronto and won both the best film and screenplay awards in Havana, and was Argentina’s contender for the 2020 Oscars. The road movie “Las siamesas” received a nomination for the 2022 Goya Awards in the category of best Ibero-American film.

Today, it appears that discussing issues related to gender equality, such as feminism, women’s rights, men’s rights, and power structures like patriarchy, is a socially acceptable and important topic. These concepts are spreading rapidly, much like a storm or an echo. This was expressed by Kapow’s Ventura.

Reflecting on the current state, I find myself intrigued by delving into our past and contemplating the tireless struggle for women’s rights throughout history. This struggle has often been embodied by none other than Eva Duarte, even though she may not have identified as a feminist herself.

“‘Duarte’ aims to tackle various aspects from a personal perspective. Instead of being presented as a ‘banner of causes,’ these themes will be portrayed more organically as the authentic sprout of a woman who remained connected to her roots, using them as guidance to shape her own identity based on her instincts and beliefs. Additionally, it serves to create a world that resonates with many who share similar ideals,” he noted.

According to Ventura, Duarte’s production house, Kapow, is near completion of a collaboration agreement with two significant figures in the entertainment industry: a prominent English distribution firm and a well-known Spanish production company, for this particular project.

A media company, Kapow, was established in 2003 with a focus on creating content that resonates worldwide. Some of their notable productions include “Estocolmo,” Argentina’s inaugural Netflix series from 2016, as well as the Amazon Original series “The President” (2020-2022), which initially explores the FIFA Gate scandal. Additionally, they have contributed to the success of Argentina’s TV Pública’s beloved cooking show, “Argentine Cooks.”

“Ventura mentioned that we’re open to collaborations and are continually seeking out partners who can help us boost our ongoing initiatives,” (paraphrased)

“He stated that for quite some time, our approach has been shifting towards a collaborative structure, where we connect players and establish businesses prior to joining a platform, effectively holding onto intellectual property rights.”
