Paul Schrader to Lead Sarajevo Festival Jury, Serving Alongside Noomi Rapace, Juho Kuosmanen, Una Gunjak, Sebastian Cavazza

As a passionate cinephile and follower of the international film scene, I am thrilled to share my excitement about the esteemed jury line-up for the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival. Leading this prestigious group is none other than the legendary U.S. director and screenwriter Paul Schrader.

Paul Schrader, an American filmmaker and writer, has been appointed as the head of the jury for the feature films category at the upcoming Sarajevo Film Festival. The event will take place from August 16 to 23.

Schrader will be accompanied on the jury by actors and producers Noomi Rapace from Sweden and Sebastien Cavazza from Slovenia. Also joining are Finnish filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen and director, writer, and editor Una Gunjak, who was born in Sarajevo but now resides in Paris.

The jury will announce the winners of the Heart of Sarajevo awards on Aug. 23.

Schrader initially gained recognition as a screenwriter with the 1976 film “Taxi Driver,” which was directed by Martin Scorsese. After that, he worked closely with Scorsese on movies such as “Raging Bull” (1980).

In his filmmaking career, he first directed “Blue Collar” (1978), which was followed by other notable films like “American Gigolo” (1980) and “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” (1985), all of which received positive critical reception.

In the year 2017, he penned and orchestrated the direction of “First Reformed,” which gained him a recognition as a nominee for the best original screenplay award at the Oscars.

Lately, I’ve worked on several projects such as “The Card Counter” released in 2021, “Master Gardener” scheduled for 2022, and “Oh Canada” planned for 2024.

In 2009, Rapace attracted global notice in the entertainment industry with her compelling performance as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” earning her BAFTA and European Film Award nominations.

In the international cinema scene, she gained immense popularity and was frequently requested for her acting skills. She managed to handle major Hollywood projects like “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011) and “Child 44” (2015), alongside bold international films such as “Lamb” (2021) and “You Won’t Be Alone” (2022). Additionally, she made appearances in notable TV series including “Jack Ryan” (2019), “Django” (2023), and the recently released “Constellation.”

As a passionate film lover, I’m always on the lookout for exciting new projects. And guess what? The talented actress Noomi Rapace, through her production company Boom Films, is cooking up some amazing productions! She’s collaborating with filmmaker Ali Abbasi to bring “Hamlet” to life, and get this – she’ll be stepping into the iconic role of Hamlet herself! How cool is that?

At the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Kuosmanen introduced his first feature film, titled “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki. ” This production secured the top honor in the Un Certain Regard category during its debut.

In my recent movie-watching journey, I had the pleasure of experiencing the second masterpiece by a talented filmmaker. The movie is titled “Compartment No. 6” and was released in 2021. This captivating piece premiered at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, gracing the main competition program. Remarkably, it shared the Grand Prix award with Asghar Farhadi’s “A Hero.” So, if you missed it at the festival, don’t fret – this hidden gem is well worth seeking out!

Lately, he has been in charge of producing three episodes for the television show “Alice & Jack,” featuring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson in the lead roles.

In 2014, “The Chicken” by Gunjak was honored with the Heart of Sarajevo Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Previously screened in Cannes’ Critics’ Week, this short film later triumphed and received the European Film Award for the best short film.

I was thrilled when “Excursion,” my debut feature film, made its world premiere at Locarno Film Festival in 2023 and received a Special Mention. The journey didn’t stop there as it screened at over 50 festivals worldwide! I couldn’t believe it when we won the best script award at FAF Belgrade and the best actress accolade at Marrakech Film Festival. Now, “Excursion” is set to hit theaters in no less than 20 European countries. What a ride it has been!

Cavazza has given over 80 stage performances and acted in over 80 film projects, some of which are noteworthy like “Men Don’t Cry” (2017) and “A.I. Rising” (2018), as well as the series “Besa” (2018).
