Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Are Back to Being Sad and Horny

Prepare some tissues: Paul Mescal finds himself in another romantic tragedy, this time sharing the screen with Josh O’Connor, in the film “The History of Sound.” Directed by Oliver Hermanus, the movie tells the story of two students at Boston Conservatory before World War I, who fall in love and journey through the wilderness of Maine, recording rural music. When Mescal first read the script on Christmas 2020, he was eager to start filming just four months later, but as time passed, the project evolved over five years. Now, the heartrending musical romance is finally set for release in cinemas. Here’s everything you need to know about this potential tear-jerker of the year.

In the initial trailer for the film, released on July 24th, the musical artist Mescal displays his powerful vocal abilities by singing traditional tunes. The preview offers glimpses of two lovers sharing intimate moments, exploring Maine together, before shifting to Josh O’Connor in military attire. Mescal advises O’Connor, “Don’t die.” This movie seems likely to stir emotions as Mescal is shown with a spouse and child at least once, but let’s avoid speculation about the ending involving Mescal sniffing O’Connor’s clothing in an old closet at his parents’ house.

Who’s in the cast?

In this production, Mescal and O’Connor take on the roles of music students and lovers, Lionel and David respectively. The veteran actor Chris Cooper from ‘Adaptation’ portrays an older version of Lionel, but unfortunately, there is no older version of David in the cast. ‘Third Watch’ actress Molly Price and ‘Once Upon a Time’ actor Raphael Sbarge depict Lionel’s parents, while Hadley Robinson from ‘The Boys in the Boat’ and Emma Canning from ‘Dune: Prophecy’ play younger female characters.

When’s the release date?

The film titled “The Evolution of Sound” made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and it’s scheduled to hit cinemas on September 12. Here’s hoping that Letterboxd is well-prepared for a wave of emotional (and sensual) feedback from viewers.
