Paul Feig Says Critics ‘Took the Biggest Dump’ on ‘Jackpot!’ and ‘Excoriated Us’: ‘They Were Trying to Find Meaning’ in the Plot

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of filmmaking and its various genres, I must say that Paul Feig‘s latest venture, “Jackpot!”, seems to be a delightful blend of action and comedy, much like his previous works such as “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat”. Despite the less-than-stellar reception from critics, as evidenced by its 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes, I find myself intrigued by the premise.

Director Paul Feig recently chatted on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, discussing the mixed reactions from critics towards his movie “Jackpot!”, featuring Awkwafina and John Cena in leading roles.

Now, we’re overjoyed as our film has been the top-grossing worldwide on Amazon for four consecutive weeks, an achievement that’s truly amazing,” director Feig expressed during the recently released podcast episode. “However, the critics weren’t kind to us; they seemed to have a strong dislike for this movie, almost as if they were searching for deeper meaning in the plot.

“Jackpot!” – Now streaming on Prime Video, this movie, released in August, has a 31% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set in the year 2030, in Los Angeles, and revolves around Katie Kim (played by Awkwafina). After winning an enormous lottery, Katie becomes the focus of a lethal game where individuals can attempt to kill her before sunset to lawfully claim the massive prize. In order to outlive the “jackpot hunters,” Katie is forced to collaborate with Noel Cassidy (portrayed by Cena), an amateur lottery bodyguard.

Feig joked, “To be honest, I chose this storyline because it’s a Jackie Chan film – perfect for an entertainer to find themselves in all sorts of peril and confusion. There’s humor, surprises, and eventually, we learn about their personal histories. But please understand, I’m not here to discuss social issues or critique America. I specialize in comedy.

Film director Feig, renowned for producing “Freaks and Geeks” and helming successful movies like “Bridesmaids,” “A Simple Favor,” and “The Heat,” is slated to direct a film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s popular novel, “The Housemaid.” As per earlier reports by EbMaster, Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are set to star in this upcoming production.
