As a film critic who has spent years immersed in the intricate tapestry of global cinema, I must say that “Sugar Island” is a compelling and thought-provoking addition to the coming-of-age genre. The director, Johanné Gómez Terrero, masterfully weaves together themes of societal constraints, spiritual awakening, and the indomitable spirit of youth, all set against the backdrop of the Bateyes communities.
Patra Spanou Films secures international distribution rights for Johanné Gómez Terrero’s coming-of-age film titled “Sugar Island.” This movie will debut for the first time in Venice Days, an autonomous section of the Venice Film Festival. The initial trailer has now been unveiled (available above).
As a film enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the story of Makenya. Instead of drifting into adulthood naturally, an unexpected pregnancy propelled her there abruptly, thrusting upon her adult responsibilities for both her body and life at an early stage. This premature journey tested her resilience, revealing dimensions about her society that she hadn’t noticed before, and deepening her spiritual awareness.
In a statement, Gómez Terrero expressed: “When my niece, a teenager, found herself pregnant due to statutory rape, I saw how she was blamed by those around her rather than offered help and safety. During this time, I was deeply involved in research within the Bateyes, communities of sugarcane workers. I drew parallels between my family’s situation and the Bateyes, understanding that early pregnancies are prevalent in less privileged areas. In the course of making the film, I explored both personal experiences and the environment, as well as national records, revealing links between the private and the public sphere, emphasizing how our encompassing society can both shelter and restrain us.”
According to Patra Spanou, the director of Patra Spanou Film, the central character in this movie is a Gen Z teenager. This fresh perspective delves into the vibrant, multicultural, politically aware society of Sugar Island, portraying it as a dynamic, creative, and diverse community. The story conveyed by Makenya tackles themes such as migration, human rights, economic and social inequality in a contemporary and engaging manner. It’s adorned with powerful visuals that range from art performances, vogueing, religious events, to magical realism. This movie has the potential to draw in audiences of all ages across the globe.
