As someone who’s been diving into the world of Path of Exile since its inception, it’s simply mind-blowing to witness the meteoric rise of its sequel, Path of Exile 2. The sheer number of players flocking to this game is nothing short of astonishing! I remember when the original game was just a niche favorite among ARPG enthusiasts. Now, it’s not only among Steam’s top 20 most-played games but outperforming some heavyweights like Fallout 4 and Valheim.

In just its launch, Path of Exile 2 has surpassed the peak concurrent player count of the original game on Steam by a factor of two; moreover, it ranks among the top 20 most popular games currently played on this platform.

Initially, the pre-release version of Path of Exile 2 didn’t have the smooth start that both players and developers had anticipated. Various technical glitches and server problems marred the launch, despite a delay that shifted the debut of the early version from its intended November release date.

The developer, Grinding Gear Games, has managed to address several server problems with the ARPG, but it’s expected that some challenges may persist.

Regardless, Steam users remain drawn to the title, its player count already doubling that of the original Path of Exile.

Path of Exile 2 is already one of the most popular games in Steam history

On December 7th, the sequel to Path of Exile reached its highest number of concurrent players at 532,058, as reported by SteamDB, with this figure steadily increasing over time.

These numbers are nothing to scoff at, of course, especially when considering the first game’s performance. For reference, Path of Exile reached its all-time peak in July 2024, with a concurrent user count of 229,337.

Furthermore, the growing number of players on Steam for Path of Exile 2 has earned it a spot among Steam’s top 20 most popular games played so far.

Currently, as I’m typing this, the sequel is ranked 15th among the most-played games on Steam, surpassing Fallout 4 at the 20th spot and Valheim in 16th place. It’s also worth mentioning that it garnered over a million viewers on Twitch and temporarily topped SteamDB’s charts.

To join the elite group of top 10 games, a new release must surpass heavyweights like Apex Legends, Baldur’s Gate 3, and New World: Aeternum in popularity. Notably, New World: Aeternum reached an all-time high of 913,000 players at its peak.

It’s quite possible that Path of Exile 2 can handle it, given that we’re still in the early stages of its early access period on just the second day. With a full release, it might shatter even more records.
