Parker Posey’s ’90s Rom-Com ‘Party Girl’ Now Streaming Free – Don’t Miss It!

We’ve been missing the distinctive “Piper, noooo” in that charming southern drawl for more than a month now, and we crave another dose. Parker Posey has left an indelible mark on our hearts and internet humor as Victoria Ratliff, one of the memorable characters from Season 3 of The White Lotus. Yet, before she brought laughter to us as a wealthy, spoiled lady,

she portrayed a variety of (relatively lesser-known) eccentric roles.

Indeed, Time magazine crowned Posey as the “Queen of Indie” in 1997. This recognition came just two years after she starred in her breakout lead role in the modest yet charming film “Party Girl.” Interestingly, this was only two years following her debut performance in Richard Linklater’s classic stoner comedy, “Dazed and Confused.” Today, you can stream “Party Girl” on Prime. It perfectly captures the essence of the ’90s, offers a fun viewing experience, and is filled with memorable moments from Parker Posey, making it a must-watch for those who have missed her distinctive screen presence.

What Is ‘Party Girl’ About?

Under the direction of Daisy Von Scherler Mayer, Party Girl marked a significant milestone as it was the very first feature film to debut on the internet.

The comedy follows Parker Posey’s character, Mary, a vivacious young woman who thrives in New York City’s nightlife scene during the ’90s. She is the epitome of fun and frequently hosts parties herself. However, one unfortunate incident at an underground rave she hosted leads to her arrest. Mary’s grandmother, Judy, bails her out, but with a stipulation: Mary must now work alongside her at the library. Judy, who sees similarities between Mary and her late daughter, as well as Mary’s party-girl persona, seeks to shield Mary from a path that mirrors her own.

Initially reluctant about her new role as a clerk, Mary eventually masters the Dewey Decimal system with ease during the day, while transforming into a nighttime partygoer. Sharing an apartment with roommate Leo (Guillermo Diaz) and developing feelings for Mustafa (Omar Townsend), a Lebanese street vendor, Mary embarks on a humorous adventure to decide whether her true passion is found on the dance floor or amongst the bookshelves of the New York Public Library.

Parker Posey’s Party Full of People

Absolutely, the primary reason to watch “Party Girl” is the captivating lead performance by Posey, but she isn’t alone. A surprising number of well-known actors accompany her. Among them is a young Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actor who played Mary’s club bouncer and ex-boyfriend. The iconic drag queen, The Lady Bunny, graces the screen as part of the vibrant nightlife depicted in “Party Girl”. Donna Mitchell, known for films like “Mona Lisa Smile” and a muse to fashion photographer Bob Richardson, also stars as Rene. In essence, “Party Girl” is a veritable gathering of notables from the ’90s, creating an almost nostalgic sense of a unique period in time.

Low Budget, High Reward

Party Girl‘s limited budget of $150,000 is evident, but it adds to the film’s unique appeal. Given that many cast and crew members were already part of New York’s nightlife scene prior to production, the movie takes on a documentary-like feel. Despite the low budget, it doesn’t lack charm. The costume designer, Michael Clancy, was inspired by Posey’s genuine fashion enthusiasm and primarily relied on favor from friends in the fashion industry to create her outfits.

The intimate, grassroots vibe of “Party Girl” lends it an authentic ’90s atmosphere, making it a joy to watch Posey, the indie queen, in action, particularly at such a young age. It’s as if it was a genuine labor of love, devoid of any corporate ambition. The movie is charmingly lighthearted, eccentric, and nostalgic about a specific era and location. “Party Girl” is a classic representation of an independent film, and it’s almost ironic that it has been revived into prominence by the wealth of Victoria Ratliff.

Party Girl is now streaming on Prime Video and for free on Tubi.
