Parker Posey Was ‘Gaslit’ Into Thinking She ‘Wasn’t Viable’ For Major Hollywood Movies After the Indie Scene Was ‘Co-opted By the Studio System’: ‘It Was Such a Head Trip’

Parker Posey had to establish her credibility once more as she transitioned from independent movies to major studio projects.

During a recent interview on the “Smartless” podcast, actress Posey, known for her roles in independent films such as “Party Girl,” “Dazed and Confused,” and “Basquiat,” was asked if she still identifies as the “queen of indies.” Posey explained that once she started being recognized in prestigious locations like New York City, she realized her status as an indie icon was fading.

Posey stated that it seemed as though he had been referred to indirectly. He explained, ‘My journey wasn’t exactly, ‘I starred in Greg Mottola’s film,’ but more like, ‘Greg Mottola read his script for a movie he was trying to finance,’ and then I introduced him to Liev Schreiber who was working on ‘Party Girl.’ A year later, we made ‘The Daytrippers.’ It was such a close-knit group of people back then.’

She explained, “As soon as I and the indie scene were revealed, it started getting taken over by the major studios. Suddenly, it transformed into something else, and I found myself struggling to secure financing for my films.” This was a confusing experience because, after leading independent movies shot in just 23 days, I had to audition for Hollywood productions instead.

In the world of Hollywood, Posey felt misled, believing she didn’t possess enough talent to lead a big-studio film project.

She put it this way: ‘I can assure you I’ll learn these lines from the script, and it’s going to be fun, just believe me!’ This was followed by approximately two decades of such experiences, and then collaborating with renowned directors, making movies (often without substantial pay), yet having the opportunity to express my creativity.

Undoubtedly, Posey has had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most esteemed filmmakers in the business. Over the course of her professional journey, she has joined forces with Richard Linklater, Gregg Araki, Christopher Guest, Kogonada, and Ari Aster.

In the upcoming 22nd season of “Actors on Actors,” Posey will make an appearance, where she’ll share the screen with Lisa Kudrow from “The White Lotus.
