CJ ENM, the powerhouse behind the Academy Award-winning “Parasite,” and Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) are planning to debut their first jointly produced unscripted series, titled “Mugen Loop” (“Infinite Loop”). CJ ENM is currently showcasing at the ongoing Hong Kong FilMart.
The high-concept game show places six contestants, including Koko from K-pop girl group Izna, in a claustrophobic hexagon-shaped environment with endlessly connected, identical rooms. Players face increasingly difficult challenges to accumulate unlimited prize money, but failure means elimination through group voting. The psychological warfare intensifies as contestants battle not just the challenges but each other, with only one ultimate winner claiming the entire cash prize.
“As more Korean unscripted shows are well-received globally, it has become crucial to discover distinctive yet comprehensible ideas that foster viewers’ interests,” said Jangho Seo, executive VP of the content business division at CJ ENM. “‘Mugen Loop’ is a big yet clear-cut show that will propose a clear answer to those challenges.”
The format emerged from the strategic partnership established between the companies in 2021.
According to Jun Fukai, director of global Sales and development at TBS Holdings, the project was born from discussions between top creators from both networks, with CJ ENM providing the initial concept while TBS shaped the creative vision.
“Korean producers made numerous visits to Japan, engaging in extensive creative meetings to refine every detail, ultimately bringing this groundbreaking show to life,” Fukai said. “While ‘Mugen Loop’ will first air in Japan, we are confident that audiences worldwide will be captivated by its unique appeal.”
Seungyong Nam, an executive VP at CJ ENM’s non-scripted division, expressed that this upcoming show could be akin to the popular series “Genius Game.” He emphasized the show’s distinctive blend of creative ideas from individuals with diverse backgrounds, which promises to deliver a groundbreaking and entirely novel concept.
“Mugen Loop” premieres March 24.
