The Korean company Barunson E&A, known for producing Bong Joon Ho’s Academy Award-winning film “Parasite,” is broadening its international presence by teaming up with the exciting Indonesian production company, Imajinari, on a new project.
The agreement grants Barunson the authority to manage the international remake licenses for three of Imajinari’s most successful productions: the horror-comedy phenomenon “Agak Laen,” its future installment, and the grimly humorous film “Tinggal Meninggal.”
Or simply:
Barunson is given the task to oversee international remake rights for three of Imajinari’s top hits: the horror-comedy sensation “Agak Laen,” its upcoming sequel, and the dark comedy “Tinggal Meninggal.
Barunson is changing its approach by venturing into the licensing of remake rights, aiming particularly at the rapidly expanding film industry in Southeast Asia, signifying their growth beyond conventional co-production and international sales.
Imaginari, launched in 2021 by comedian-director Ernest Prakasa and manager Dipa Andika under the Hahaha Corp talent group, has swiftly emerged as one of Indonesia’s most dynamic new-age production studios. The studio gained significant attention with its debut release in 2022 titled “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap,” which attracted a whopping 2.8 million cinema-goers to secure the fourth spot among Indonesia’s top locally produced films that year.
In 2024, the studio’s blockbuster movie “Agak Laen” (originally a podcast adaptation) tells the story of an unconventional group whose supposedly unscary haunted house transforms into the real thing, causing it to become viral. This horror-comedy was a smash hit at the box office, raking in more than 9.1 million ticket sales, making it Indonesia’s most successful comedy film and the second-highest grossing local movie overall.
As a storyteller, my approach has consistently revolved around crafting unique narratives that captivate and astonish audiences. Partnering with Barunson E&A is exhilarating, as we delve into the opportunity to reinvent our creativity on a global scale through remakes, breathing fresh life into beloved stories across the world.
Before the release of “Agak Laen 2” in Q4 2025 by director Muhadkly Acho, Imajinari will debut “Tinggal Meninggal” on Aug. 7 instead. This upcoming dark comedy is currently being finalized in post-production and tells the story of a solitary man named Gema, whose harmless white lies to catch his coworkers’ attention escalate into a series of increasingly complex predicaments.
After establishing its international division in 2022, Barunson E&A has been actively growing its worldwide influence. The company has taken part in numerous Indonesian film projects, such as the action-thriller “13 Bombs” (Visinema Pictures), the horror movie “Respati” (Base Entertainment), and the remake of “Rangga & Cinta,” helmed by seasoned director Riri Riza and produced by Miles Films.
Yoonhee Choi, CEO of Barunson E&A, shared that Imajinari is renowned for narrating heartfelt stories on themes such as family, love, and human bonding in a novel and engaging manner. We are thrilled to present their distinctive intellectual properties to international viewers, amplifying creative talents that deserve a broader platform.
