Paramount Lands ‘Guys With No Friends’ Comedy Script From Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont After Bidding War (EXCLUSIVE)

After a fierce, studio-wide bidding competition, Paramount Pictures secured the rights to “Guys with No Friends,” an original screenplay penned by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, for a substantial sum of money in the millions.

The team of Kaplan and Elfont, known for their movies like “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “Josie and the Pussycats,” have been working primarily on television lately. They are responsible for creating shows such as “Mary+Jane” for MTV and the award-winning “Liza on Demand” for YouTube Originals. Some of their other writing credits include “Made of Honor” and “Leap Year.

The adult-rated movie “Guys Without Companions” is part of Paramount’s ongoing mission to breathe life back into cinematic comedies. Other forthcoming films in this category include “Reality Deception,” starring Liam Neeson, the remake of “The Naked Gun” series, a fresh take on “Scary Movie” with the Wayans Brothers, and an unnamed project from Kendrick Lamar, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone.

In a ‘man date’ arranged by their exasperated spouses, four shy, middle-aged gentlemen embark on an unforeseen whirlwind of city adventures. This tumultuous night leaves them physically and mentally battered yet surprisingly connected, forming an unexpected camaraderie that alters their ordinary lives forever.

Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold are serving as producers, while Matt Schwartz is overseeing production at Safehouse. Meanwhile, Kaplan and Elfont are in the role of executive producers.

Kaplan and Elfont secured a contract with Verve in May, finalizing the “Guys With No Friends” agreement just over a week after they became part of the agency’s roster. On the management front, they are still being handled by Entertainment 360.

As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to report that Safehouse is riding high on its winning streak. Fresh off the success of “Test Drive,” which found a home at 20th Century Studios, they’ve just released “Novocaine” through Paramount Pictures this spring. To top it all off, their documentary recently claimed the Audience Award at Sundance. Safehouse, represented by CAA and the dynamic duo Carlos Goodman and Aron Baumel at Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, continues to make waves in the film industry.
