Paolo Sorrentino to Be Feted at 31st Sarajevo Film Festival

This year, Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino is set to receive the Sarajevo Film Festival‘s prestigious Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award. In addition, a selection of his movies will be screened as part of the festival’s “Tribute To” series.

Additionally, Sorrentino will lead a workshop where he’ll express his insights about modern art, engaging in a dialogue with the attendees.

The award is in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the art of cinema.”

Jovan Marjanovic, the festival director, stated: “Paolo Sorrentino achieved what every filmmaker aspires to – he made a worldwide impression through local, intimate narratives. His work, characterized by visual opulence, emotional depth, and intellectual nuance, resonated with global audiences, who found his characters, despite their eccentricities or solitude, reflective of our world, often absurd, occasionally harsh, yet undeniably human. The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo is a tribute to the profound beauty he shared with us through his films.

Sorrentino expressed his heartfelt gratitude for being acknowledged so profoundly and appreciated the focus bestowed upon his body of work.

In 2001, Sorrentino’s debut full-length movie, titled “One Man Up,” was chosen to be screened at the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

In the years 2004, 2006, and 2008, Sorrentino contended for the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival with his films “The Consequences of Love”, “The Family Friend”, and “Il Divo”. Among these, it was “Il Divo” that secured the jury prize.

In 2011, he went back to compete at Cannes again with “This Must Be the Place,” and then in 2013 with “The Great Beauty.” This latter movie received multiple accolades including the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA Award for best foreign-language film, as well as three European Film Academy awards.

He revisited Cannes Film Festival in 2011 with “This Must Be the Place” and again in 2013 with “The Great Beauty.” The latter movie garnered several prestigious awards such as the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA Award for best foreign-language film, three European Film Academy awards, and more.

In 2016, he was chosen yet again in the Cannes competition for his work titled “Youth.” This recognition led to him receiving three European Film Awards, a nomination for an Academy Award, and two nods for Golden Globes.

In the year 2016, he was responsible for both the conception and direction of the TV show “The Young Pope,” which featured Jude Law and Diane Keaton in leading roles. This series received nominations for Jude Law as Best Actor at the Golden Globes and for exceptional Production Design and Cinematography at the Emmy Awards.

In 2018, Paolo Sorrentino helmed the film “Loro,” featuring Toni Servillo, while in 2019 he took charge of the second TV series revolving around contemporary papacy, titled “The New Pope,” which starred Jude Law and John Malkovich.

Last year, I penned and steered the captivating film “The Hand of God,” a cinematic masterpiece that garnered a nomination for the 2022 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. Not only did it receive the prestigious Leone d’Argento Grand Jury Prize, but it also took home the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival. As a movie reviewer, I can confidently say that this film is not to be missed.

In the year 2024, he penned and orchestrated “Parthenope,” a movie that was screened in competition at Cannes and garnered the Biglietto D’oro as one of the most watched films of the year.
