Last year, Pamela Anderson solidified her independent film resume with a Golden Globe and SAG Award nomination for “The Last Showgirl.” Now, she’s secured another leading part for herself.
The star is slated to be part of Sally Potter’s upcoming film “Alma,” sharing the screen with Golden Globe-nominated actress Dakota Fanning (“Ripley” and “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood”), BIFA Award winner and BAFTA nominee Lindsay Duncan (“Birdman” and “Le Week-End”), as well as Arinzé Kene (“I’m Your Woman” and “Harvest”), Esther McGregor (“Babygirl” and “We Were Liars”), Esmé Creed-Miles (“Hanna” and “Silver Haze”), and Earl Cave (“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” and “The Sweet East”). More casting announcements are expected for this talented ensemble.
Film production company, Bankside Films, has secured global distribution rights for “Alma” before the Cannes Film Festival. They plan to present this upcoming project to potential buyers at the festival itself. As of now, “Alma” is still in its pre-production phase and is scheduled to begin filming on location in England come September.
The narrative revolves around a close-knit family gathering to spread their mother’s remains, yet they unexpectedly encounter her ghostly presence. This spectral figure, in a series of dramatic and humorously chaotic incidents, gradually reveals the hidden truths about each family member’s life.
Finding the perfect blend of captivating performances to breathe life into a script can be like searching for hidden treasure,” explained Potter. “For our upcoming film ‘Alma,’ we’ve found three gems in the form of Pamela Anderson, Dakota Fanning, and Lindsay Duncan – actors I have long admired and wished to collaborate with. Their unique talents will complement each other beautifully, alongside Arinzé Kene and three rising stars: Esther McGregor, Esmé Creed-Miles, and Earl Cave.
I’m captivated by the film “Alma,” a masterpiece that sees Potter collaborating once more with Christopher Sheppard of Adventure Pictures, who has previously brought us gems like “The Roads Not Taken,” “The Party,” and “Orlando.” This time, he joins forces with Rebecca O’Brien of Sixteen Films, responsible for movies such as “The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” “I, Daniel Blake,” and “The Old Oak.” Les Films d’Antoine, led by Antoine Simkine in France, and Komplizen, spearheaded by producers Jona Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, and Maren Ade in Germany, are also co-producers on this project. Stephen Kelliher serves as executive producer for Bankside Films.
It’s a privilege to collaborate with Sally on this engaging, witty, and emotionally impactful tale about a family in turmoil during challenging moments,” stated Bankside managing director Kelliher. “Sally’s script is consistently captivating, and the talent she’s gathered for this project speaks volumes. We eagerly anticipate audiences enjoying it.
Renowned for her unique art-house approach and daring film topics, Sally Potter gained significant recognition in 1992 with her audacious adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s timeless novel “Orlando,” featuring Tilda Swinton. Following this breakthrough, she has penned and directed eight feature films, such as “The Tango Lesson” (1996), “The Man Who Cried” (2000), “Yes” (2004), “Rage” (2009), “Ginger & Rosa” (2012), “The Party” (2017) and “The Roads Not Taken” (2020). Potter’s films have accumulated over 40 international awards and garnered both Oscar and BAFTA nominations. As a songwriter, she released her debut album “Pink Bikini” in 2023, with her second album, “Anatomy,” scheduled for release on May 2.
