Bushiroad and Pocketpair have announced a new trading card game called Palworld: Official Card Game, based on the popular creature-collecting game Palworld. Currently, details are limited, but the game is scheduled to release on July 30th.
Palworld: Official Card Game is a competitive card game for two players. Players battle each other using Pals with special abilities, focusing on strategy and tactics. You’ll build bases and collect resources while fighting alongside your Pal companions to achieve victory. Successfully using each Pal’s unique traits is key to winning.
Last year, hints of a Palworld trading card game began circulating after Pocketpair, the creators of Palworld, and its partner company COS invested in Bushiroad, a Japanese card game publisher. Bushiroad’s president, Takaaki Kidani, sold his shares as part of this deal. This move came after Pocketpair created a new division, Palworld Entertainment, specifically to expand Palworld’s merchandise offerings.
So, things have been a little crazy with Palworld lately. Nintendo actually sued us, claiming similarities between our game and Pokemon – even pointing out our spin-off, Palfarm, looked a lot like Pokemon Pokopia. To try and smooth things over, we ended up taking out some of the gameplay features Nintendo had issues with. It’s been a bit of a learning experience, honestly.
Okay, so this legal battle just got way more complicated. The head of the US Patent and Trademark Office has ordered a closer look at Nintendo’s patent – it basically protects the core idea of bringing in a character to fight another one in a game. It’s a pretty fundamental mechanic, and now it’s under review, which means things could change drastically. As a gamer, this could impact a lot of the games I enjoy!
