Initially when Palworld debuted in early 2024, some groups raised concerns about the developer potentially employing generative AI within the game. In response to these criticisms, John “Bucky” Buckley – communications director and publishing manager for Palworld – has addressed this topic, expressing that such allegations have negatively affected members of their studio. He also firmly stated that these claims are entirely baseless or nonsensical.
In response to IGN’s question about the effect of AI “slop” allegations on the employees at Pocketpair, Buckley emphasized that it had a significant and immense impact.
In my opinion, the most significant challenge we’ve faced so far is still ongoing, and it’s a common topic in discussions about Palworld, news articles, or Reddit posts. People often express dislike for this company due to allegations about their use of AI, but these claims are misguided at best. It’s frustrating indeed.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the ripples of these allegations throughout Pocketpair. Particularly, our concept artists have been deeply affected. We’re fortunate to have a handful of Pal concept artists on board, and two in particular who’ve been with us since the very beginning. They aren’t fond of this sort of turbulence, but it seems nearly impossible to refute such claims, something we’ve unfortunately had to learn firsthand.
Instead of recording a video, Buckley mentioned that they contemplated having their employees discuss the issue, but it turned out none of them were comfortable appearing on camera.
A large number of our artists are women, but in Japan currently, it’s not the preferred approach to be in the public eye or on camera. Consequently, they choose to remain anonymous and keep their identities hidden. This situation remains disheartening for them, as it still is today.
Buckley stated that the publication of an authentic Palworld art book by Pocketpair significantly boosted their argument against AI allegations. However, it did not generate the level of impact we had anticipated, maybe.
In part, Pocketpair became associated with AI due to their CEO’s positive reaction to an earlier post about artificial intelligence, according to Buckley. Additionally, Pocketpair launched a party game titled “AI: Art Imposter,” where players create AI-generated images, and others attempt to identify which are real and which were created using AI. However, this interpretation suggests that the studio passionately embraces generative AI, but Buckley pointed out that it overlooks crucial context.
Since its release, Palworld has consistently received updates, with the most recent one arriving around mid-March, introducing cross-platform play. Right now, you can access Palworld on both PC and consoles. Additionally, it comes bundled with Xbox Game Pass.
